BIPOC and POC etc. aren't exactly the same as Black.

(Personally, while I don't sign on to every single thing the self identified group says, I very much identify with and encourage the use of "FBA")

-follow some Black folks

-boost their posts

-do this semi-regularly

-listen to Black folks and support them when they complain about #racism they've experienced here or elsewhere, PLEASE do not get defensive about Mastodon. Work through those feelings on your own

Frankly, it gives me shades of #ChappellesShow. Remember how we used to laugh so hard at the skits, but look askance at non-Blacks laughing because the jokes were so personal that they could mean something totally different to even lightly racist ears?

I want the influx of new Black users to the fediverse to be a wake-up call for the white folks who've been oblivious to the racism that's inherent to this space. It's not okay to have to play server Russian roulette. It's not okay to drive away users because of racist moderation policies.

You cannot stop at "No racism" in your fucking server rules and leave it at that. Tell us why we should trust you and what you're actually doing to curb racism on the Fedi. And act like you fucking mean it.

@ThatAuntie Your concern is completely legit. Absolutely true that some parts of the white audience for Black pop culture misuse it to reinforce racism, & fair to call out silent white followers of #BlackMastodon.

But I also fear white folks barging into a Black space and taking up all the air. Much of the work we white folks need to do is to listen and learn rather than assume the prerogative to talk and teach. So I'm generally going to be careful about jumping in w/out an invitation.
