Scenic #hiking trails! The trails that I hike to get to scenic streams and waterfalls also have their own inherent beauty. Here are examples of the trail that I took two days ago while #snowshoeing in the #mountains in NH. This trail winds around steep terrain (left pic), travels along and across streams, and eventually steadily climbs up the ridge of the mountain (right pic). Enjoy! #snow #ice #trees #nature #explore #outside #exercise #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography

Reminds me a bit of those Twitter pundit-influencers I had wanted to move to Mastodon. They all stayed, giving Musk juice — and I think so much less of them now.

I am celebrating the 40th anniversary of my hike this year with daily posts (including 40 years ago today, May 2 - Oct 3) and hopefully a sequel Appalachian Trail hike and book within the next two years, if I can get all my ducks in a row for it. It should be an interesting contrast. I was 24 when I made the original hike.
My book Then the Hail Came (A Humorous and Truthful Account of a 1983 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike) is available in both paperback and eBook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QFG4ZR6

@MikhailYasnev @StillIRise1963 GISAID is the international database used to track SARS-CoV-2 variants. Identifiers like "XBB.1.5" are GISAID nomenclature identifiers for the variants. The "family tree" for the virus extends from the Wild Type (WT) at the lower left, then fans out into all currently known variants. This is why I say we're on about variant 500 or so!
- I smiled at the name of this boat...Little Nauti! What a cute play on the word naughty! Spotted in Hackett's Cove Nova Scotia, the brightly red of the hull of the boat matched the red doors of the boat house and the Canadian flag perfectly. #NovaScotia #boating #WAYCTV #fishing #EastCoast https://fineartamerica.com/featured/a-little-nauti-in-hacketts-cove-karen-cook.html?newartwork=true
Today I decided to wear my hex color code leggings, so technically this is not a selfie but a #5E1F1E
One of my early works. A cityscape of Ulm, Germany. Watercolor and colored pencil. Created 20+ years ago, a gift for my husband. Inspired by our travels together, painted with a love of #architecture #history and this beautiful city.

Ahh, spring. Not here yet. Lots more March snow to get through in #Vermont before we get this.
One of my favorite vintage lenses, an Olympus OM, wide open, manifesting it’s funky loveliness.
I found old photos of the very chairs I sat in as a little kid in my local library (now gone). I have fond memories of randomly picking up books and seeing where they would take me. Libraries are like airports to other lands, other times. Tardises! Fortunately, my family also had lots of books at home, but many families don't. A fifth of UK libraries have closed in the last decade due to cuts. Books change lives!

"We are only at the start of our thinking about this."
no, not really. A lot of us arent't. I, for example, wrote this two years ago, and it's not my first comment to the problem:

Pyrite
From Mindat.org https://www.mindat.org/min-3314.html
Formula:FeS2
Color: Pale brass-yellow
Streak: Black
Luster: Metallic
Hardness: 6 - 6½
No Cleavage: Brittle Fracture
Specific Gravity: 4.8 - 5
Crystal System: Isometric
Crystal Habits: Cubes, octahedrons or pyritohedrons
Non-magnetic
Name: Named in antiquity from the Greek "pyr" for "fire", because sparks flew from it when struck with another mineral or metal. Also known as “Fool’s Gold.”
Pyrite is my second favorite mineral after fluorite. I just love the perfect cubes and other shapes that seem impossible to have been created by nature. The interpenetrating twinning, the way it sometimes replaces organic matter in fossils (called pyritization), its bright gold/brassy metallic sheen, and high specific gravity makes pyrite a beautiful mineral, that feels good in the hand, and can be affordable and very collectible.
Famous art collector, the fearless Hester Diamond, had several exquisite pyrite specimens in her collection that were auctioned off at Sotheby’s. The picture of the stacked cubes below were hers, and sold for thousands and thousands of dollars. While pyrite is called fool’s gold, Hester was no one’s fool as her great taste in minerals shows. And when it comes to gold, pyrite is associated with, and can sometimes contain up to 25% real gold. In the mineral world, pyrite is a pyrize :)
Now it’s your turn! What is your favorite mineral, and what are the things you love about it? Tell me in the comments, please!
Bill Brandt again
Bombed Regency Staircase, Upper Brook Street, Mayfair
c. 1942
(I very likely have seen the silver print of this, which MOMA has)
I think this is a bit uncharacteristic of Bill Brandt, like yesterday’s, in that he is not diving deep into the depths of black tones, as he liked to do.

Every Thursday evening I drive an hour north & cross into Quebec to play in a #curling 🥌 game. This great article from Seven Days VT goes into why many of us from #Vermont cross the border to enjoy the sport of curling!
https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/vermonters-sweep-into-quebecs-curling-scene/Content?oid=37697494
As the article notes, we are hosting a Learn to Curl event this Sunday, March 5. More info at https://www.greenmountaincurlingclub.org/participate/learn-to-curl
As a member of the GMCC Board, we welcome anyone to join in! And.. our goal is to find a way to build a curling facility in Vermont!
