Some more "intentional holes" for #Fiberuary – this time, in crochet. Two skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock went into this little shawl. I can wrap it around my neck and tuck the tails into any one of the holes, and it doesn't slip.

Although it's kind of scratchy, I think it's gotten the most use of any of the shawls I've made. (This is probably because I made a bunch of them at the start of the pandemic and haven't gone into an office since...)

You know how some mushrooms just seems to be a bit extra photogenic? 🍄 📷
Well, I stumbled upon such mushrooms during a walk in my childhood forest, while I was visiting my Mother back in September of 2018 and I couldn't help snapping a photo.

A sad but timely reminder from Heavy Whalley about the hazards of winter (it's not spring yet) and the importance of telling someone where you are going: heavywhalley.wordpress.com/202

Today my apartment in #Seattle did fire alarm testing. Nobody enjoys that, but it has to be done. I'd definitely rather be inconvenienced than on fire.

What followed, though, was almost two hours and fifteen minutes of uninterrupted shrieking, and a safety hazard to several hundred people and their pets.

A thread. 🧵

after spending 2,5 months in muslim regions we are facing now also catholic/christian villages: there are pigs on the street, jesus symbols, people drink alcohol and smoke.
questions about which religion we practice is now daily program. due to our turban, they think we are mauritanians from sahara 🤣
1. at the bar of 'jean-baptiste' drinking a cold beer (realising we do not like alcohol anymore)
2. 'pierre' visiting us at our campsite this morning, asking endless times for money and gifts

Got in the tree taps yesterday. Perfect week to try collecting sap for syrup. It takes 2 1/2 gallons of sap to get 1 cup of syrup. So it’s really just for fun. We have very large sugar maples in which I have 4 taps in 3 trees. Also, experimenting on a birch, and on our neighbor’s black walnut. Might get a couple of tablespoons from those trees. 😂 #foraging #maplesyrup #Trees

Did the Marbling Infinity Puzzle from Nervous System on a short vacation. Lots of fun and rather challenging for 180 pieces.

In case you haven't seen this cool idea, the picture wraps around, so the pieces on the top edge can be taken out and reconnected at the bottom etc. I.e. the pieces would fill the surface of a torus if they were floppy enough?

It means the way we finished it could (and almost certainly will) look different from the way others will complete it.

Thanks @nervous_jessica

Hey everyone! I’m new here so I thought I’d use my first post to introduce myself a little. I’m Amanda, I’m 33 living in Canada, currently working as an animator on the kids’ show Rubble & Crew. My heart lies in hand-drawn animation though so I find time to draw whenever I can. Lately I’ve been experimenting more with colour and honing my painting skills! My favourite medium is probably alcohol markers but I love mixing all mediums together including digital. Nice to meet you! 🙋🏻‍♀️

35 years of Red Dwarf…

Here’s composer Howard Goodall talking about the music.

(Goodall made some excellent programs about music you can also find on Youtube by searching his name)

It seems like the majority of medically-recognised #Autistic traits are not autistic traits per se.

They are trauma responses common in autistic people.

I'm "more interested in things than people?" Maybe "things" don't turn hostile on me for unexplained reasons.

I'm dogmatically insistent that nobody can understand my mind but me? Maybe my entire childhood was spent resisting adults telling me they knew my mind better than I did.

This is also why "autistic traits" can seem contradictory. Both "talks about their interests all the time even in inappropriate settings" and "never talks about their interests" can be part of a diagnosis.

Because the latter is a trauma response to having the former shut down.

Is there an untraumatised autistic person?

I actually don't think so. So the map of what autism looks like to clinicians is shaped by our trauma.

And this probably compounds their impression that we're somehow defective, which in turn compounds the attitudes used to break us.

I just wanna be seen as a person.

Born in 1750, Caroline Herschel worked as assistant to her astronomer brother William. But she also made her own discoveries of nebulae, stars & 8(!) comets.

In 1787, King George III officially employed Caroline as her brother's assistant, including a small salary that made her the first woman paid for her contribution to #science.

Caroline submitted over 550 stars to the existing star catalog & received honorary membership in the Royal Society. space.com/17439-caroline-hersc #history #HistoryRemix

"Connemara Cowshed" Your morning #painting today came out of the experience of a few hours where I sat with my paints and bicycle at the side of a road in the west of #Ireland where the most noise I heard was a man from some distance away walking the road with a radio hanging around his neck until he passed me. #Art #Cycling

Hey, folks. Big layoffs at DigitalOcean today, and my team and I were hit. In fact, so was my adjacent team, and a good chunk of my department. I don't have much reach here on Mastodon yet, but if anybody wants to discuss opportunities for a technical editor / writer / manager of same, I'm up for it.
