@PNS Congress did authorize an official study. They estimated that a solar EMP would kill 90% of Americans (indirectly through infrastructure failure). Nothing was actually done, of course (like hardening power grid equipment).

Read up on faraday cage to store basic equipment. Try to get internet peers (NOT "ISP"s). I had three, but they all moved out of Mordor (NoVa).

While Solar EMP is a big threat, nuclear might be worse. We have no (unclassified) defense against a high altitude nuke. Detonated at high altitude, it generates an EMP that can blanket 1/2 the US. (Killing no one directly - except maybe people with pacemakers, etc.0

Nuclear EMP has far more high frequencies affecting micro-electronics than solar.

I had a clearnet mirror somewhere, can't remember where atm.

@PNS I could go for this if servants ran the carpet through the wash daily.

@PNS@noauthority.social I could go for this if servants ran the carpet through the wash daily.

My Dad would've freaked if we got snow inside the house in that amount.

@fuknukl Well - a drug dealer *is* an unlicensed pharmacist. The "Drug War" is more like a Turf war. Most people get their fentanyl via prescription.

Opioids cut pain in half - but make healing take 3 times a long. If at all possible, grit your teeth (with a mouth guard) and tough it out.

So if a pound is 0.45359237 KG, then a Pound Sterling (£) would be $1120 in today's money.

I'm pretty sure that ever since 2008 the mainstream corporate economy has just been fake, and all of these companies are just getting cash handouts from the treasury.

That's the only explanation of why they suddenly started to only care about signaling political alignment and just completely stopped caring about customers, service, and ... being a company.

@PNS The "Palestinians" that stayed in Israel during the 6 day war are very nice, and still Israeli citizens to this day. It is the ones that evacuated according to Arab demands that became homeless and progressively violent and unhinged to this day. (The very same Arab nations would not and will not take them in either.)

@PNS I'd speak at the church, and the message would be on "I tell you. But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

@cjd I've been buying GL-inet devices. The cheapest are like $25USD. The most expensive I have sports 4G cell modem and a battery (hot spot for working from the woods).

At one point I used them for a batman-adv neighborhood mesh network. (All the members moved away...)

@PNS

The prevalence of 3, 6, 12 multipliers is why Thomas Fowler's wooden calculator used balanced ternary.

Irregular multipliers for place value actually leads to fewer mistakes. The problem with the metric system is that all the multipliers are 10 or powers of 10. This is a featureless landscape leading to misplaced decimals. Once it become familiar, the rugged landscape of 2,3,5,12,20,60 etc multipliers prevents this type of error within the covered value ranges. (Once you start talking about millions and billions and trillions of pounds/miles/etc you have the same problem as the metric system.)

@dwaem @troed @signalapp It matters when your services go down. The point is Signal should NOT be centralized. In fact, just use Linphone (or any SIP client) with cryptomesh IPv6 (cjdns/yggdrasil/pinecone/etc) for the equivalent of Signal. Your CGA IPv6 is your "phone number". With an actual decentralized protocol, it doesn't matter how many people are down - the ones still up can still talk to each other.

When matrix.org went down, the Synapse Admins room was discussing the issue - because matrix.org going down just means accounts on that instance (admittedly a lot) are down.

TIL that the president of Signal believes that people who run Mastodon and/or Matrix servers do so "in most cases" on hyperscaler* infrastructure.

This is my Mastodon server. And its UPS. And its networked KVM for when things get really hairy.

It's also my Matrix server. And Nextcloud. And Git. And Home-Assistant. And Jellyfin. And SearXNG. And Peertube.

When people objected to her claims, she doubled down and proclaimed condescendingly that we "don't have a clear understanding of this space".

TIL that I don't feel confident in recommending people to use Signal. Something's very off here.

*) "hyperscaler" basically means the big cloud infra providers with provisioning APIs that allow you to scale your resources up/down automatically with usage
