Finland has a modern army with possible 280.000 conscripts...And St. Petersburg is only a few hours car ride away from the border with Finland. Even if the Ukraine falls, Russia gets a real NATO member just nearby with a very long border and, potentially, with the nukes...

@CSB yes, you may be right on this point...but I doubt that the majority of the French are desperate. They are more frightened, inflation, war etc. If one is frightened, one does not turn to experiments. Besides - There were the Yellow Vests. What has become of them? They were still a minority. The TV duell seemed to be Macron's victory too (slight advantage, but still).

Like elsewhere in Europe, the majority of voters sticks to what they are used to. Le Pen is a risk in their eyes. The US population ist more inclined to take risks.
