➜PHD⇢➤Take the Oil? American Oil Company Finally Gets a Syrian Oil Deal
An American oil company now has a deal to modernize the oil industry in areas controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Thursday.
"Protecting the oil would allow U.S. forces to shift to an Iran-focused mission after the defeat of ISIS, especially as a key Iranian supply route to Lebanon passes near the oil-rich area of Deir al-Zor. And it would keep the precious resource out of the hands of Bashar al-Assad, the Iranian-backed ruler of Syria. Graham and other policymakers used oil to sell a continued U.S. presence in eastern Syria to Trump, according to Syrian Emergency Task Force executive director Mouaz Moustafa, who has worked closely with members of Congress. “If you want to feed the baby medicine, you put the medicine in candy or something. nationalinterest.org/blog/skep

➽BSC➜MSC⇢ When the war on terror turns inward
By HENRY REYNOLDS | On 31 July 2020
We now have evidence of a campaign conducted in Australia to attack the credibility and the reputation of individuals and organisations seen as being too close to China.

A knock at the door… illustration – Alex Anstey
In a recent article in The Guardian Hamilton Nolan commented on the current employment on the streets of American cities of the par-military forces established for action on the nation’s borders. He believes that the Department of Homeland Security has become a White House controlled paramilitary and surveillance service. Both the laws passed and the institutions established in the days after the September 11 attacks have now been used within the boundaries of the state. He observed that Americans’ are finding out what happens when the war on terror is turned inward upon ourselves.’
Australians should see this as a warning of what could unfold here particularly as we enter into a period of rising tensions brought about by our plunge into the Trump inspired cold war with China.
As I read the article I was immediately reminded of the raid unleashed three weeks ago on the home and office of the New South Wales MLC Shaoquett Moselmane. Not knowing much about New South Wales State politics I had never heard of Mr. Moselmane. But I found the whole proceedings deeply disturbing. I was also surprised that so few people seemed to share my concerns
To begin with the Federal Police showed no respect for Mr Moselmane who has been in public life for many years as a three term Mayor of Rockdale and as a member of the New South Wales Upper House since 2009. The contrast with the treatment of two Federal Ministers accused in recent times of possible illegal behaviour could not be greater. It was so discrete that they were not even questioned.
But there was much more to it than that. The whole exercise was deliberately histrionic—a dawn raid on the family home by a dozen federal agents. An hour later six further officers arrived. Such raids are calculated to terrorize families and embarrass and humiliate the chosen victim. They are also designed to make sure that all the neighbours are aware of what was happening. Both the scale of the raid and its mode of operation signalled to the public that there was strong reason to believe that the targeted individual has been guilty of heinous crimes against both society and the state. How the victim of such a raid can subsequently receive a fair trial has never been explained.
But even more egregious was the fact that the Federal Police had tipped off the media and made sure the television cameras were rolling when the strike force arrived. This is by now standard practice. How do they get away with it? How it can be justified is hard to discern. This is partly because the cosy relationship with the media has seemingly never been questioned. johnmenadue.com/when-the-war-o

➽➜⇢ Despite the Hype, the US has no Allies against China
Since particularly the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, a sea change in the US policies vis-à-vis China has taken place. Its latest manifestation came on July 23 when the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, delivered what has been called the American “Iron curtain” speech. Pompeo’s “Communist China and the Free World’s Future” speech does provide a significant insight into how the US is trying to establish a ‘new cold war’ global politics whereby it can place itself once again as the leader of the ‘free world’ against China, the so-called epitome of “threat” to America—its unilateral supremacy, its hegemonic domination of the world politics since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and its increasing tilt towards sabotaging multilateral agreements, such as the Iran nuclear deal, to extend its own and those of its allies’ supremacy, even if it comes at the expense of peace. Pompeo’s speech does show that the US is projecting China as an ‘evil power’ that needs to be countered. To quote him: journal-neo.org/2020/08/03/des

➜A⇢➤ "A revitalized Russia and a modernizing China began to represent a potential counterweight to U.S. hegemony as the world’s unilateral superpower, a reaction that Washington accelerated with its strategic maneuvers to surround both Russia and China with military bases and adversarial alliances by pressing NATO up to Russia’s borders and President Obama’s “pivot to Asia.” The U.S.-backed coup in Ukraine on Feb. 22, 2014, marked a historical breaking point as Russia finally pushed back by approving Crimea’s request for reunification and by giving assistance to ethnic Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine who resisted the coup regime in Kiev. [Surprisingly, China decided not to criticize the annexation of Crimea.] On the global stage, Putin fleshed out the earlier energy deal with China, including a massive 30-year natural gas contract valued at $400 billion.

⇢A➤ Presumptuous Pompeo Pushes Preposterous ‘Peking’ Policy
A rant by Mike Pompeo regarding what the U.S. should do with China led to a fruitful exchange between an old China, and an old Soviet hand By Ray McGovern July 31, 2020 "Information Clearing House" - Quick. Somebody tell Mike Pompeo. The secretary of state is not supposed to play the role of court jester — the laughing stock to the world. There was no sign that any of those listening to his “major China policy statement” last Thursday at the Nixon Library turned to their neighbor and said, “He’s kidding, right? Richard Nixon meant well but failed miserably to change China’s behavior? And now Pompeo is going to put them in their place?”
Yes, that was Pompeo’s message. The torch has now fallen to him and the free world. Here’s a sample of his rhetoric:
“Changing the behavior of the CCP [Chinese Communist Party] cannot be the mission of the Chinese people alone. Free nations have to work to defend freedom. …
“Beijing is more dependent on us than we are on them (sic). Look, I reject the notion … that CCP supremacy is the future … the free world is still winning. … It’s time for free nations to act … Every nation must protect its ideals from the tentacles of the Chinese Communist Party. … If we bend the knee now, our children’s children may be at the mercy of the Chinese Communist Party, whose actions are the primary challenge today in the free world. …informationclearinghouse.info/

In a statement to SANA on Sunday, a Foreign and Expatriates Ministry official source said that the Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms the agreement signed between Qasad “SDF” militia and a U.S. oil company to steal the Syrian oil under the sponsorship and support of the U.S. administration. The source affirmed that this agreement is considered as an integrated and aggravated theft and it can be only described as a deal between thieves who are stealing and thieves who are buying, and it constitutes an assault against Syria’s sovereignty, and a continuation of the U.S. hostile approach towards Syria which is represented in stealing the resources of the Syrian people and hindering the efforts exerted by the Syrian state for rebuilding what has been destroyed by terrorism which is mostly backed by the U.S. administration itself. The source added “Syria considers this agreement null and void and has no legal effect and it warns again that such despicable acts express the approach of those client militias which have accepted to be a cheap puppet in the hands of the U.S. occupation.” The source asserted that those hired militias realize that the brutal American occupation will inevitably disappear and that it will be defeated like the terrorist groups which the Syrian state has been able to defeat as the Syrians are able to protect their resources and to preserve the unity of their country’s territories and people. en.abna24.com/news//damascus-c

➽BSC➜ ATOMIC BOMBINGS AT 75: John Pilger — Another Hiroshima is Coming — Unless We Stop It Now
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were acts of premeditated mass murder unleashing a weapon of intrinsic criminality. It was justified by lies that form the bedrock of 21st century U.S. war propaganda, casting a new enemy, and target – China.

By John Pilger
in Sydney, Australia

When I first went to Hiroshima in 1967, the shadow on the steps was still there. It was an almost perfect impression of a human being at ease: legs splayed, back bent, one hand by her side as she sat waiting for a bank to open.
At a quarter past eight on the morning of August 6, 1945, she and her silhouette were burned into the granite.
I stared at the shadow for an hour or more, then I walked down to the river where the survivors still lived in shanties.
I met a man called Yukio, whose chest was etched with the pattern of the shirt he was wearing when the atomic bomb was dropped. consortiumnews.com/2020/08/03/

Special to Consortium News
Congress’s inability to actually represent the real-live human beings of America, combined with an economic system that rewards lack of empathy and an excess of greed, has brought us to a dark time when an oncoming tsunami of financial ruin, destitution and evictions towers over our heads, blocking out the sunlight.
The impending evictions may soon kick 28 million people/families out of their homes. To put that in perspective, only ten million people lost their homes during the 2008 economic crisis, and that was considered by anyone paying attention to be the craziest thing to ever happen.
What we’re facing now could be three times crazier, getting to Charlie Sheen levels. (I almost wrote “Kanye West levels” but everything he does is in hopes of being mentioned in the media, and I’m not falling for it. …Shit. This parenthetical has betrayed me!)
To talk about the impending homelessness tsunami, we have to first get past the fact that our government could totally bail people out and keep them in their homes. Not only have they already bailed out big banks and Wall Street to the tune of $4.25 Trillion, but on top of that the Pentagon has over $21 Trillion of unaccounted-for adjustments on their books over the past 20 years. This is to say – there’s plenty of money.
Money is an idea, a concept, an imaginary metaphysical belief, and it’s high time we faced the fact that the U.S. government has an unlimited imagination. As philosopher Alan Watts once put it: Money is not a thing, it’s a measurement. Saying there’s not enough money to do something is like a builder saying there’s not enough inches to build a house. He has the wood, nails and hammers. He’s just out of inches.

(Ed Yourdon/Flickr)
The U.S. government could easily give every American $2,000 a month for the foreseeable future, which would keep almost everybody in their homes and apartments. In fact, Canada has opted to give $2,000 a month to those who lost work because of the pandemic.
But ignore the fact that there’s enough money. That’s not what we’re here to discuss.
There are also enough empty homes. As of 2018, there were nearly 1.5 million vacant homes in the country. Compare that to the estimated 553,742 people homeless on any given night. So even before the pandemic, there were three empty houses for every homeless person. Three. That’s not even accounting for empty apartments, yachts, sheds, extra bedrooms, garages, condos, cubbyholes, attic spaces, basements, barns, pool houses, and walk-in refrigerators. consortiumnews.com/2020/08/03/

➽PHD➜ ATOMIC BOMBINGS AT 75: Scholars Speak Out Against ‘Unnecessary’ Attacks
August 2, 2020
Japan was ready to surrender, making the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and Nagasaki two days later, totally unnecessary and morally indefensible, say a panel of scholars in two video discussions.

The bombing of Nagasaki as seen from the town of Koyagi, about 13 km south, taken 15 minutes after the bomb exploded. In the foreground, life seemingly went on unaffected. (Wikipedia)
The debate over the atomic bombings—a controversy that forced the Smithsonian Institution to abandon its Enola Gay exhibit 25 years ago—continues unabated in America today as we approach the 75th anniversary of the incineration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Four historians, each of whom has written extensively on the topic, discussed the documentary evidence and explored the current state of knowledge about the bombings in two sessions with TV, print, radio, and internet journalists from around the world.
Among other points, they argue that the bombings were unnecessary as Japan was ready to surrender as long as they could keep the emperor (which the U.S. eventually allowed them to do); that U.S. generals, including Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur, were opposed to the bombings; and that a real aim of the attacks was to send a message to the Soviet Union and not to avert a U.S. invasion, which was still months away.
The historians taking part are:
Gar Alperovitz, formerly a Fellow of Kings College Cambridge, the Institute of Politics at Harvard, and Lionel Bauman Professor of Political Economy at the University of Maryland, is the author of Atomic Diplomacy: Hiroshima and Potsdam and The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb. He is currently a Principal of The Democracy Collaborative, an independent research institution in Washington, D.C.

Some 8,000 U.S. contractors have died abroad since 9/11, compared to 7,000 U.S. troops. Military contracting was sold to the American people as a way to reduce the cost of military operations, yet the result has been quite the opposite.
Recent research of mine has shown that rather than reduce costs, military contracting — or what I call the “Camo Economy” because it camouflages human and financial costs — has resulted in higher costs to taxpayers. It has also distorted labor markets and contributed to rising inequality, as military contractors earn excessive profits that enable them to pay their employees and particularly their top executives much more than their counterparts in the public sector and most other private sector jobs.
In 2019, $370 billion — more than half of all Department of Defense (DOD) spending — went to contractors. While contracting is sometimes called “privatization,” I think this is an inaccurate description, since military contracting serves a public purpose and uses public funds, while contractors earn profits at the taxpayer’s expense and are often not subject to the competitive pressures of private markets. fpif.org/the-camo-economy-how-

➽➜⇢ ➜⇢ ➽ ➤ The CIA’s Complicity in Recent Global Atrocities Revealed
By Robert Scheer
February 24, 2020 "Information Clearing House" - In another astounding revelation about the extent of United States’ global surveillance operations, The Washington Post recently published a piece about a Swiss company, Crypto AG, that was actually owned by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and West Germany’s intelligence agency. Crypto AG provided encryption services to over a hundred governments worldwide for decades. Unbeknownst to those governments, the CIA had access to the encryption tools and could therefore read high-level internal governmental correspondence from countries including France, Egypt, Venezuela and many others.
On this week’s edition of “Scheer Intelligence,” Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer speaks with William Binney, a leading intelligence expert who worked at the National Security Agency for 30 years, about this shocking information that is only now being made public, roughly two years after the program ended in 2018. In the exchange, Scheer highlights why the revelation is not only incredibly worrying in terms of the power it allowed the U.S. to wield for decades, but because of its historical implications. informationclearinghouse.info/

➜⇢➤The Latest 'Russiagate' BOMBSHELL Took Just One Week To Be Exposed As Dud. Who Was Its Source?
By Moon Of Alabama
July 08, 2020 "Information Clearing House" - Within just one week the recent attempt to revive 'Russiagate' has failed. It was an embarrassing failure for the media who pushed it. Their 'journalists' fell for obvious nonsense. They let their sources abuse them for political purposes.
On June 27 the New York Times and the Washington Post published stories which claimed that Trump was informed about alleged Russian bounty payments to the Taliban for killing U.S. soldiers and did nothing about it:
A Russian military spy unit offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants to attack coalition forces in Afghanistan, including U.S. and British troops, in a striking escalation of the Kremlin’s hostility toward the United States, American intelligence has found.
The Russian operation, first reported by the New York Times, has generated an intense debate within the Trump administration about how best to respond to a troubling new tactic by a nation that most U.S. officials regard as a potential foe but that President Trump has frequently embraced as a friend, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive intelligence matter. informationclearinghouse.info/

By Medea Benjamin , Ariel Gold
July 08, 2020 "Information Clearing House" - US presidential candidate Joe Biden wants you to believe that he is opposed to Israel’s likely annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to carry out this month.
“I do not support annexation,” he said during a recent call with American Jewish donors. And yet, Biden’s senior foreign policy adviser, Antony Blinken, has insisted that under no circumstances - not even the annexation of the West Bank - would Biden consider reducing or withholding US military aid to Israel.
In addition, contrary to the position of his former boss, US President Barack Obama, Biden also pledged that, if elected, he would keep disagreements with Israeli policies private. informationclearinghouse.info/

by AHRAR AHMAD
While the abject inhumanity of slavery may have been legally mitigated to some extent, the institutions, practices and values of exclusion, exploitation and devaluation were not. Constitutional guarantees, and Supreme Court decisions, could be cleverly subverted by States. For example, Black people were denied the right to vote through poll taxes, arbitrary registration requirements, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, white primaries and so on. In 1940, 70 years after they had received the right to vote, only 3% of Blacks in the South were registered as voters. Less overt voter suppression efforts continue to this day. More

➜⇢➤ UPRISING: Police, Prisons & the Pentagon
In the era of Covid-19, climate change and an increased focus on longstanding structural racism, a new approach to “security” is desperately needed, writes William D. Hartung Think of it as a war system that’s been coming home for years. The murder of George Floyd has finally shone a spotlight on the need to defund local police departments and find alternatives that provide more genuine safety and security. The same sort of spotlight needs soon to be shone on the American military machine and the wildly well-funded damage it’s been doing for almost 19 years across the Greater Middle East and Africa.
Distorted funding priorities aren’t the only driving force behind police violence against communities of color, but shifting such resources away from policing and to areas like jobs, education, housing, and restorative justice could be an important part of the solution. And any effort to boost spending on social programs should include massive cuts to the Pentagon’s bloated budget. In short, it’s time to defund our wars, both at home and abroad. consortiumnews.com/2020/07/08/

➜⇢➤ The Racist Underpinnings of the American Way of War
The deadly interplay of racism, genocide, and denial at the heart of American white society has been reproduced in the country’s wars. The U.S. military command’s pushback against President Donald Trump’s attempt to use the military against people demanding racial justice has received a lot of good press.
But let’s not overdo the praise. For most of their existence, the U.S. Armed Forces were racially segregated. It was only in the 1950s that the slow process of integration began, with racial discrimination still a major problem in the ranks today.
While race has been widely discussed with respect to the composition and organization of the military, much less attention has been paid to the way racism has been a central feature of how the United States has waged its wars.
The military is an institution of American society, and as such its origins and development have been centrally influenced by the political economy of U.S. capitalism. fpif.org/the-racist-underpinni

This choice, which the US President faced, can be formulated in terms of the recent history of a “pseudo-state” neighbouring Russia. Trump had to give a public answer to the question: “To be Yanukovych or not to be?” — with the only correction that the US President does not have real estate in Rostov, and he hardly wants to change the gilded, pretentious interiors of Trump Tower in New York for something else. stalkerzone.org/trump-announce

July 04, 2020 "Information Clearing House" - Russia did it again. This time Moscow is accused of “paying to kill Americans”. How criminal!
Such things only Americans would do – Washington, the Pentagon, CIA…. Because killing and have killed is in their mindset and bloodstream. That’s what criminals do: They project their own crimes onto others.
The latest NYT reporting is, “It’s not the Taliban that were offered a ‘bounty’ for killing American / NATO soldiers, but Afghan criminals.” The NYT admits to a mistake in their reporting – a mistake that had already been confirmed by another two media traitors, the WaPo and the WSJ? – Com-on, NYT! ➽➜⇢➤ Every American Should Watch Abby Martin’s New Afghanistan War Documentary
Abby Martin’s new documentary, “Afghanistan War Exposed: An Imperial Conspiracy,” is a tour de force, a must watch for every American seeking a holistic understanding of American’s longest-running war. The perpetual occupation of Afghanistan has become so normalized that it mostly serves as background noise to most Americans. It’s even jokingly referred to as the “Forever War,” accepted as just another constant reality. A soldier dies now and again, a couple of dozen civilians get killed in another bombing. It’s never enough to stir the population to pressure Washington enough to stop it. And the endless war drags on.
From George W. Bush to Barack Obama, to Donald Trump, every U.S. president has promised to end the war. But their plans to bring the troops home inevitably require first sending more troops to the country. You can’t look at all this rhetoric and reality and not conclude that the United States wants to stay in Afghanistan forever. And there is a reason, despite an unresolvable military quagmire, that the Empire won’t let go of Afghanistan. mintpressnews.com/every-americ

Islamic Republic has weathered the Covid-19 storm and is on the cusp of a US-defying manufacturing revolution
So what’s goin’ on in Iran? How did the Islamic Republic really respond to Covid-19? How is it coping with Washington’s relentless “maximum pressure”?
These questions were the subject of a long phone call I placed to Prof. Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran – one of Iran’s premier, globally recognized analysts.
As Marandi explains, “Iran after the revolution was all about social justice. It set up a very elaborate health care network, similar to Cuba’s, but with more funding. A large hospital network. When the coronavirus hit, the US was even preventing Iran to get test kits. Yet the system – not the private sector – managed. There was no full shutdown. Everything was under control. The numbers – even contested by the West – they do hold. Iran is now producing everything it needs, tests, face masks. None of the hospitals are full.” ahtribune.com/world/north-afri

An avalanche of government-debt crises is sure to follow, he said, and “the system just can’t handle this many defaults and restructurings – at the same time”. Some have queried how it could be that President Putin would co-operate with President Trump to have OPEC+ push oil prices higher – when those higher prices precisely would only help sustain U.S. oil production. In effect, President Putin was being asked to underwrite a subsidy to the U.S. economy – at the expense of Russia’s own oil and gas sales – since U.S. shale production simply is not economic at these prices. In other words, Russia seemed to be shooting itself in the foot.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/rev

➽➜Who Was Panic Selling Oil Today? Goldman Answers

by Tyler DurdenMon, 04/20/2020 - 21:42
In the annals of market history, April 20, 2020 will be forever remembered the day when, for the first time ever, the deliverable WTI future contract plunged 50%, 60% - the drop accelerating - then 70%, 80%, 90%, 99%, ... and then the unthinkable happened: after the May WTI contract dropped to $0.00, meaning it was free to get delivery of oil, it proceeded to slide into negative territory - a never before seen event in market history - as oil producers were paying their customers to take delivery of physical oil in a world in which oil storage has essentially run out.
And so the price of oil tumbled, dropping further into negative territory, before finally stopping at -$40.32, the lowest price ever recorded for a barrel of WTI.zerohedge.com/commodities/who-

➽➜⇢➤Canadian Oil Prices Turn Negative As Global Demand Vaporizes
Yes, producers are paying buyers to take the stuff off their hands.Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has called on the federal government to expand aid to the oil and gas industry as the price of some Canadian oil products turned negative on Monday.
Oil analysts say a growing number of producers are willing to pay buyers to take oil off their hands due to a lack of storage space for unwanted product. This is particularly true of “landlocked” producers, such as those in Alberta’s oilsands and some producers in the U.S., who have limited access to global oil shipping routes.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/negati

In the Soviet Union, activists were sent to state psychiatric wards. According to the state, any and all opposition to government policy was considered a form of mental illness.

Stephanie Buck writes about the treatment of the “social parasite” Joseph Brodsky.

In 1963, Russian poet Joseph Brodsky was seized and sent to a mental institution… Hospital workers pumped him with tranquilizers and repeatedly woke him during the night. He was given cold baths and wrapped in wet canvas that shrank and cut his skin while drying.

It is not likely German lawyer BeateBahner will be tortured like Brodsky. However, that does not make her arrest and forced confinement in a mental institution any less egregious. ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/

Bill Gates calls for nationwide shutdown: 'Shutdown anywhere means shutdown everywhere' THAT WAS 13 DAYS AGO
Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates called for a nationwide shutdown on Tuesday, arguing it would be the most effective way to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
Gates wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that he has spoken with experts through his work with his charity who said a national policy would be more effective over having a hodgepodge of states issue stay-at-home orders while others remain more open. He argued that the country needs a "consistent nationwide approach to shutting down."
“Despite urging from public health experts, some states and counties haven’t shut down completely. In some states, beaches are still open; in others, restaurants still serve sit-down meals,” Gates wrote. thehill.com/policy/technology/
