RT @AJamesMcCarthy@twitter.com

This is the moment Mars peeked out from behind our moon after being hidden for an hour. This shot was captured using my largest telescope and a special high-speed camera. Seeing another planet rising on the horizon of our moon was such a surreal experience.

Swearing about Matt *%#*ing Hancock

So, according to Matt Hancock…
The spread of Covid in care homes - down to care home staff.
Professor Ferguson breaking the Covid rules - a matter for the police.
Matt Hancock breaking the rules - it was ‘lurve’.
Going on ‘I’m a celebrity’ - raising awareness of dyslexia.
And the latest?!?
Handing dodgy PPE contracts to Michelle Mone - he was bullied into it.

Aaagghhhhh. Please. Can. He. Just. Fuck. Off.

At 60 degrees north we don't get very many hours of daylight at this time of year but the light we do get can be incredible #Shetland #Scotland #horse #Shetlandpony

Calanais Standing Stones, Isle of Lewis. The 'Shining One' is said to walk the avenue at Midsummer sunrise, his coming heralded by the call of the cuckoo.

UK Politics

Tory politics on display this morning sums up the moral collapse of our government.
Zahawi lies brazenly and calmly on the media round about the NHS and dares to equate striking nurses with pandering to Putin.
Braverman has gone off piste again endorsing some rancid pamphlet that seeks to be as cruel and draconian as possible to asylum seekers, ideally leaving the ECHR to do so.
And Hancock continues his ‘forgive poor little me’ tour by blaming care workers in his book.
Just abysmal.

Goshawk.

For a few years, each winter I would visit a location in Shropshire, and wait patiently for a glimpse of this fearsome raptor, the goshawk.

I would frequently hear them calling, but sightings were few and far between, sometimes without seeing anything for hours at a time.

This moment, when one broke cover to display over the trees, made it worthwhile. It circled for just a few seconds before vanishing once more.

On a cold day in December, it is possible to get very clear skies across the Scottish landscape. For this shot, I hiked up Gleann a’ Chaolais in order to get some elevation before setting the drone free. This meant that I could get the drone just above the ridge of Sgorr Dhearg which gave some wide views of the region. On the left sits the mountains of the Mamore Forest. The Pap of Glencoe sits in the middle leaving the mountains of Glen Coe to the right.

During the depths of winter, a large portion of the surface of the River Etive freezes over for a short few days. Here, the force generated by a double waterfall prevents ice from forming across the whole surface. The water on the rocks remain frozen and slick. Not a great place to fall in…!

All right #Mastodon, show this #twitterexodus refugee what you can do.

Walked away from 6700 followers because I won't provide content (not directly, at least) or be in the same space as a destructive & dangerous narcissist. This new (for me) place is cool but I do miss being able to post a special #nature #photograph & know it will get seen thousands of times.

I guess that's my #introduction. I rant about #covid #CovidIsNotOver & #LongCovid & I live in a beautiful place. With a foot of snow.

At various spots by the side of the River Etive, rock pools are formed and filled when the river is in spate after heavy rain (a common occurrence!). Water remains in the pools as the river subsides. There are a few days in the depths of winter when these pools can freeze solid. This pool lies near the top of Glen Etive just below a set of double waterfalls. Stob a’ Ghlais Choire rises above the river in the background.

“Creeping authoritarianism”

Sunak warns us of China’s “creeping authoritarianism”.
But what does he think his own party’s recent legislation does?

Would he like to comment on the…
Police, Crime & Sentencing Act
Public Order Bill
Bill of Rights Bill
Retained EU Law Bill
Elections Act
Nationality & Borders Act…
And the recent arrest of journalists here…

Because if they don’t represent “creeping authoritarianism” I’m not sure what does.

One of the nicest things about #Shetland winters is when the mirrie dancers appear. Mirr means blur in Shetland #dialect. Tonight as I watched the #AuroraBorealis , it really did appear like dancing figures, the speed of their movement obscuring their edges as they merged with the darkness #nature #Scotland #aurora
