Many years ago, a friend recommended Belle & Sebastian to me so I went out and bought “If You’re Feeling Sinister” on vinyl.

I put it on my brand new record player and instantly fell in love with how poppy and upbeat everything was, so I then dubbed it onto a cassette so I could listen to it in my car.

A couple of weeks later, I was driving around with the same friend who recommended them, so I popped in my tape so we could listen and sing along and talk about how great it was and, after about a minute of listening, he was like “Holy shit! This sounds so rad with the sound sped up like this!”

…and that’s when I realized I knew nothing about record players and had been playing it on the wrong speed for weeks.

To be fair, I still occasionally listen to Belle & Sebastian on the wrong speed and it DOES sound rad. Like toddlers going off about high school stuff.

Read my lips:

An audio show that can only be played in an Apple player on an Apple device is not a podcast.

An audio show that can only be played in Spotify is not a podcast.

Repeat ad nauseam for any other proprietary audio show platforms.

A #podcast is an #RSS feed with enclosures of audio files which are playable across the whole ecosystem of podcast players.

Any reporter who reports on exclusive audio shows and calls them “podcasts” are doing a grave disservice to their audience.

Folks want me to explain this somehow but really how much more complicated is it than "there is always someone willing to act as kapo for three extra slices of bread."

Again, material concerns drive real world actions. It's not even remotely confusing; and fascism is a grift that pays way better than solidarity.

I'm now frequently seeing "cannot be understated" where the author means "cannot be overstated" even in ostensibly professional writing. It doesn't even have the bad excuse of following casual spoken language that "could/ couldn't care less" has. It's just obviously wrong. And yet.
