Cooper's Hawk

Another photo of a cooper's hawk.

"The oldest recorded Cooper's Hawk was a male and at least 20 years, 4 months old. He was banded in California in 1986, and found in Washington in 2006." - allaboutbirds.org

Good morning. 🍂🍂🍂

25 September 2023

Yesterday the sky was dark, and I was sure it would rain, but other than a few isolated drops, nada. Today, I hope will be different, my lawn could use some rain. I haven't been keeping up with watering this year. Interestingly, in Louisiana, you can find ground water about a foot below the surface.

My personality used to include a taste of OCD. When I say "used to" I mean relatively recent past, not my long-ago younger days. When something needed to get done, I would obsess until it happened. But now-a-days, in retirement, I'm as mellow as a pillow.

It's weird how our personalities change over the years. We're more like machines than we'd like to believe. A slight chemical imbalance changes the ballgame.

“Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind.” - David G. Allen

#ThrowbackThursday to a few years ago, pre-pandemic, when I was commuting 52 miles (84Km) roundtrip every day from our then home near downtown down to the Johnson Space Center (glad I don’t have to do that any more). I took this photo while heading home on a #summer evening when the otherwise mundane drive in Houston freeway traffic was transformed by this a dying #thunderstorm over the city, spectacularly lit up by the setting sun.

Where is she?

This is a male pileated woodpecker. I took the photo a few months ago, there was a mated pair hanging out in nearby trees. In this photo he stopped what he was doing to look around.

Wait, #throwbackthursday is still a thing?! Don't mind if I do. See: cherry blossoms from our first trip to Japan in 2014. (Coincidentally about the last time I trucked with social media.)

My aunt gave me this pic after my uncle died in 1995. I don't know where she got it. Back says "Flea Time."

My uncle was a P.O.W. in Germany in WWII. He was in The Great Escape camp and then Stalag VIIA, Moosburg, at the end of the war before being liberated on April 29, 1945. The camp was riddled with fleas and lice. They had to delouse themselves.

The story of seven of these POWs is profiled in this book.

Herbie Hancock is not only using technology for the #jazz music ( #synths #patchbays #effects #sampling ) but here, we find him using an Apple /// (with a green phosphor Monitor ///) with VisiCalc (#spreadsheet) to manage his music business (1983). He was waiting for an Apple Lisa too... both computers ultimately unsuccessful, unlike the apple ][ (which he used in studio and shows) and Macintosh that would follow. #Macintosh #appleII #MARCHintosh #appleIII #retrocomputing @jazz @retrocomputing

Apparently it's National Puppy Day, so I'm throwing it back to 2017 when my two pals, Calvin & Gigi, were just wee little tykes. Hard to believe I've been taking care of them for 6 years already! What a joy they've been. ❤️ ❤️

Great White Egret

It's easy to see how this bird gets its name. Lurking in the shadows on the bayou, it looks both beautiful and deadly.

'It is often found standing in the water or walking on land looking for food. This species of egret typically feeds by wading through shallow water while stalking its prey, waiting until it comes near the feet before pouncing on them." - learnbirdwatching.com
