UKpol, NHS, Healthcare provision
If I hear one more person wittering on about "efficiency savings" in the #NHS I'm going to scream. The NHS has been pared to the bone in the name of efficiency savings and it does not work because you can't predict exactly when or how people are going to need the service.
I don't want the NHS to be efficient. I want it to have the capacity to deal with whatever gets thrown at it. I WANT there to be empty beds, because that means there's nobody waiting for a bed. I WANT Doctors to spend a certain amount of their day twiddling their thumbs, because that means people aren't stuck waiting in pain and desperation.
Am i weird?

If you are interested by those #photometeor, here is an amazing #picture of the #Sun with so many of them, as annotated on the second picture.
They are the result of #Sun's reflections and refractions into tiny ice crystals (in clouds or fog) of various shapes, which act as mirrors or prisms.

I suppose it’s the nature of the beast, but mathstodon.xyz seems to be dominated by people on the Pure end of mathematics. If you’re working in #AppliedMathematics or #Physics — give me a shout so that I can follow you!
Boosts for reach would be very much appreciated.
Over the years I've been lucky - have barely used the #NHS. But I was always grateful it was there, should I need it.
I had a hospital appt this afternoon. The nurses and doctors were wonderful; the process was efficient; the care was first rate.
I'm fine, and all is good.
But it seems our govt wants to destroy this incredible service. As I left the hospital I counted 11 ambulances waiting in a road, unable to discharge patients. There were more ambulances waiting in another road. Shameful.
We are not doing enough efforts...
We just hit #record high in 2022 in terms of #CO2 emissions from #fossil fuels.
This curve should go to #zero 0️⃣ if we want the #Earth 🌍 to stay an #habitable #planet !

From how many stars formed in the Milky Way in the past, we can estimate that today's Milky Way contains about 100 million black holes [1,2 ⬇️]. Most of them we cannot detect.
Black holes in close binaries with normal stars - called X-ray binaries - are exciting, as we can observe their effects [3⬇️]. The #BlackHole draws matter from the companion. The stripped material spirals into the black hole, forming a hot accretion disc that emits observable X-rays.

Time to remember the magnificent cover from the 25th of December, 1947, “Edition Nöel” of the “Journal de Tintin”. Yes, it’s not a photo, nevertheless notice the absence of any #publiclighting, the #starrysky, the grey snow (it’s night, but that does not mean absolute darkness - natural #darkness is brighter than many could imagine). One might speculate that there’s no moon either, since there are no shadows. We are missing this possibility due to #lightpollution from millions of useless lights.
It's time to vote.

Awesome article by @ghuntley how opensource is becoming more fracturwd due to VSCode. Also shows how Microsoft's love for opensource has hidden agenda

If you have a poster printer, and a very long light curve of an interesting eclipsing system, then you can print out your data without sacrificing any detail! Here's a Masters student I am working with and the combined light curve she's generated. Seeing it plotted out in its glory is absolutely fantastic! Lots of dusty eclipses FTW.
