Always look up 🙂

This beautiful circumzenithal arc or "upside-down rainbow" graced the skies over our house for more than 90 minutes this fine spring evening 🙇‍♂️

I don't know what the squirrels in my back yard are up to *exactly* but I feel like I'm the one who's going to wind up in jail for it.

Tooters. My google-fu is failing me & I need your help.

Is there a Mastodon client for iOS that has a built-in animated GIF browser, as the bird app does?

That is, a button which takes you to a repository of GIFs which you can search & then insert one into your toot, as opposed to the ability to upload a GIF from your own photo library.

I can’t see how to do this in the official iOS Mastodon app, or METATEXT or Ice Cubes, & I feel a bit stupid 😬

Me every time I find a tutorial for something I need help with, only to discover it's actually a video and not a text with images:

UK peeps: consider signing this government petition (to halt passage of the Online Safety Bill, which will gut end-to-end encryption including your online banking security, personal message privacy, and right to privacy in general): petition.parliament.uk/petitio

Free at last!
The 16m long Radar for Icy Moons Exploration (RIME) antenna on the ESA Juice spacecraft, which had been stuck after unfolding 2 of its 6 segments, is finally free after some shaking and rotating of the spacecraft using its thrusters. 🛰️ 🎉

Hey, I noticed that Mastodon didn’t make nice previews for links to my blog, so I read up on the necessary & fixed it, and then obviously had to write a blog on the blog about fixing the blog. Which (if my tests are valid) should decorate this post a bit. If you don’t see this post, that means it broke and I had to delete the post until I fixed things.

If your links suffer from bad-preview syndrome this might be helpful. Otherwise not really of general interest.

And there is this scandal from big 4 accounting firm, PwC (Price Waterhouse Coopers): the Australian government hired a PwC partner to help them develop better laws to tax multinationals but unbeknownst to the government, the partner leaked the information internally allowing PwC to devise schemes to sell to clients which would bypass the new laws:

👀 #TIL Monopoly wasn't invented by the Parker Brothers, nor the man they gave it credit for. In 1904, Monopoly was originally called The Landlord's Game, and was invented by a radical woman. Elizabeth Magie's original game had not one, but two sets of rules to choose from.
One was called "Prosperity", where every player won money anytime another gained a property. And the game was won by everyone playing only when the person with the least doubled their resources. A game of collaboration and social good.
The second set of rules was called "Monopoly", where players succeeded by taking properties and rent from those with less luck rolling the dice. The winner was the person who used their power to eliminate everyone else.
Magie's mission was to teach us how different we feel when playing Prosperity vs Monopoly, hoping that it would one day change national policies.
When the Parker Bros adopted the game, they erased the "Prosperity" rules and celebrated "Monopoly".

Finally! We've been waiting since November of last year to share these amazing results and beautiful images with everyone. Our Cycle 1 JWST/MIRI images of the Fomalhaut Debris Disk reveals never before seen details of the inner regions of this complex exoplanetary system!

We are a lethally stupid species 🙄

To avoid being castigated for visibly burning off methane from fossil fuel production, Turkmenistan is simply invisibly venting it, creating far more damage: CH4 has 80 x the greenhouse impact of CO2 🤦

They thought no-one would notice. They were wrong 🛰️

Just finished this, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the UK parliamentary system and UK democracy. It’s a very readable deep dive into what does and doesn’t work at the moment (only published last month), and although it’s depressing along the way, it points to some relatively straightforward fixes at the end. We can change this if we choose. Read it and tell your MP! #books #democracy #Parliament

This is big. No #embargoes. No #APCs.

"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.

In a move that could send shockwaves through commercial scholarly #publishing, the positions are due to be adopted by the Council of the EU member state governments later this month."

How many astronomers does it take to change a light bulb? Well, apparently two if it is the halogen lamp of a Fabry Perot calibration unit and they don't really know what they are doing.
