It's pretty cold outside, so today's post is about a sock found in #Egypt. It's divided at the big toe because it was designed to be worn with thonged sandals. It's made of wool, nalbinding technique (single needle looping). Several examples of such socks are known from Egypt, where they have been preserved due to the dry desert climate. They were worn by men, women, and children. Found in #Egypt, dating 5th/6th century AD.

At age 4, I was classified as 4c, enemy alien, even though I was born in the U.S. Within a few months, the internment of our community was ordered by FDR with broad support from the American people, who turned their backs upon us. We lost our homes, our businesses and our freedoms. (2/4)

John Muir is hailed as an environmental hero. He wrote & advocated to protect the “wilderness,” including Yosemite. But the land, Ahwahnee, was already named & loved by the Ahwahneechee people.

Muir wasn’t interested in the original inhabitants. He was a pioneer in the environmental movement, but he was also racist & friends with prominent eugenicists. His complicated legacy is just one of many examples in American #history when environmental protections were at odds with environmental justice.

Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via #StreetsblogUSA, read their article linked below. #bikelanes #bikes #cities #transportation #mobility #sharrows #infrastructure #urbanism

If you’ve ever wondered what the difference is between a seal and a sea lion then HAVE I GOT THE CHART FOR YOU.

Owls diplomats: Some barn owls progress faster and some slower. In the animal world, it is often the case that stronger eject the weak from the nest, but that´s not the case in barn owls. They develop very specific cooperative behaviors and “negotiate” who will receive their food next. On these occasions, the young owls give each other a say and don´t interrupt the "speaker." In fact, they seem have a real dialogue, which is sometimes difficult on a human level.

To paraphrase the great Malcolm X, you can't stab someone with a six-inch blade, pull it out 3 inches, and call it progress.

And in the fedi, many people won't even admit the knife is there.

Ignoring the pandemic doesn't make it go away. All it does is disproportionately shift all of the burden of the pandemic on to the people who are the most vulnerable and have the fewest resources.
