The 4 traits lucky people have in common, according to author of ‘The Luck Factor’
I was reading some papers by archeologists at the 1770’s site where the HMS Endeavour ran aground upon the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Marine biologists helping with this 1970’s archaeological study mentioned visiting sharks and admitted a fascination with ichthyosaurs, a super-predictor worthy of further investigation. #marinebiology @newscientist
This 2020 video by Tom Scott is a great example of #dataanalytics for my senior students. I am loving the discussion of the survey design, hypothesis and limitations. Good visualisations and laughs too https://youtu.be/V5u9JSnAAU4
Every year at Christmas now I think about Christmas 8 years ago when I nearly died with my wife, child and in-laws.
I share this every year over on the Bird Site and will share it here now.
It was Christmas Eve. 9 year old was just 1. We were staying at my in-laws who had an acreage just outside Red Deer at the time. We went to bed a bit late but the night was good. 1 year old wasn’t up too much.
I enjoy volunteering as community relationships matter. This week I shared a lovely pizza, cooked up with some fellow scout leaders in a backyard.
Sadly, our cities by design, can end up make us lonely. Nice story by @JennaPrice

The cities we build are making us lonely. Here's how we can fix that. https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8029371/the-cities-we-build-are-making-us-more-lonely-and-isolated/?cs=14258

How right-wing religious takeover started in Victoria & spread
‘Busloads of people arrived.
I asked 1 of my fellow moderate colleagues who they were.
“The Mormons, Pentecostalists – the religious right. You know – the stacks (aka branch-stacked members)”’
An early Mastodon impression.
It’s kinda like walking out of a demonic skyscraper, into a series of Melbourne coffee shops. Each boutique space packed with its own charm, spilling onto an adjoining alley, or riverside walkway. The atmosphere filled with respectable conversations, and laughter. Whilst I am learning new traditions and rules, it’s nice to meet real people again that talk nicely and share cat pictures.
If you're trying to find journalists on Mastodon, I've created a verified database of several hundred here: http://presscheck.org. Since the backlog has become enormous, the unverified waiting list is now public also: http://presscheck.org/pending
(This is a repost of a tweet of mine from 2014 but I figured it might as well live here too! Original: https://twitter.com/astrokatie/status/518697246305439745)
@garybau welcome to Mastodon .. familiar but some things are different so it will take a while to get used to this space. So far, everybody has been really nice. I have been following the NASA rovers, Steven Fry etc.
Most of the accounts suspended on Thursday by #ElonMusk as part of the #twitterpurge, including #journalists, will awake Saturday morning to find their account reinstated following a reversal by Musk on Friday night #Twitter.
The question becomes, will those journalists who were suspended who also set up accounts on #mastodon elect to stay on this platform or go back to almost exclusively twitter?
We are committed to staying in this community personally and posting #news and #breakingnews

Up ahead: “Three Forks.” The spot where I’ll drop a set of samples that the #MarsSampleReturn missions could bring back to Earth for closer study. This first set is full of diverse rocks that could help answer if life ever arose here.

What happens to your smartphone when it gets stolen?
I recently had my iPhone stolen while on a business trip in London and, through the wonders of Find My, have been able to track its journey in the past few weeks. I found it to be a fascinating insight to what appears to be a rather sophisticated phone theft operation and thought I'd share!
