We invested so much into Tweetbot over the past 11 years and to think everything was potentially going to end was the scariest thought. But as the days went on, I started to think more rationally and knew it would be okay. As much as Twitter has brought us success, it has also been extremely frustrating for the past 6-7 years trying to build something great with a nerfed API. (2 of 6)

Public Service Warning
Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.
It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.
We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.
Here's another look, in case folks need a reminder, at the Twitter accounts that were most influential in spreading multiple false, misleading, and/or unsubstantiated claims that sowed doubt in the 2020 election:
Woah. Watching Twitter abuse our research by putting warnings on links to Mastodon.
In a study led by Ben Kaiser at Princeton, we tested the effect of interstitial warnings on user behavior.

If Musk was anything other than a rich white man, his record as owner of Twitter (or Tesla) would disqualify him from working a management job ever again.
Granting Musk the presumption of competence that comes with the title “world’s richest person” reveals in the starkest terms the way money, no matter how it is achieved, automatically confers the benefit of the doubt in most media.
I also love that things went from "I should probably figure out a Twitter alternative" on Saturday to "My Twitter account will probably be nuked for no reason" on Thursday. What a week
My last two Washington Post stories on Elon Musk before Twitter suspended me and other journalists discussed his flirtation with QAnon and the public data about his private jet:

"Musk did not, however, show how the tracking of his movements led to the incident. More importantly, he ignores the basic fact that freely available flight-tracking websites are a key tool of researchers, journalists, and activists" and have been used "to track Russian oligarchs and other corrupt interests" as well as "monitor military and political activity of public interest. Would he have these opportunities disappear?"
