We invested so much into Tweetbot over the past 11 years and to think everything was potentially going to end was the scariest thought. But as the days went on, I started to think more rationally and knew it would be okay. As much as Twitter has brought us success, it has also been extremely frustrating for the past 6-7 years trying to build something great with a nerfed API. (2 of 6)

A “legacy bug” has been found on Twitter Spaces so the feature has apparently been deactivated on the platform. Bug was discovered right after about 40,000 people were on a Space, including many who were critical of Musk. Incredibly convenient!

As Mildred Loving said: previous generations were “bitterly divided over something that should have been so clear and right.”

Today, with the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act, we celebrate our progress.

There are few things as clear and right as marriage equality.

Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

Keine Frage: Deutlich friedlicher, deutlich fairer, deutlich intelligenter hier als drüben bei Twitter. Danke an alle, die hier Lust auf Kontroverse haben, ohne das Gegenüber verbal vernichten zu wollen.

Here's another look, in case folks need a reminder, at the Twitter accounts that were most influential in spreading multiple false, misleading, and/or unsubstantiated claims that sowed doubt in the 2020 election:

Twitter suspended a bunch of tech reporters, including from The Post, which is a clown move of the first order.

Woah. Watching Twitter abuse our research by putting warnings on links to Mastodon.

In a study led by Ben Kaiser at Princeton, we tested the effect of interstitial warnings on user behavior.

There are many legitimate reasons to track Elon Musk's flight coordinates, for example to offer him ads more relevant to his interests

If Musk was anything other than a rich white man, his record as owner of Twitter (or Tesla) would disqualify him from working a management job ever again.

Granting Musk the presumption of competence that comes with the title “world’s richest person” reveals in the starkest terms the way money, no matter how it is achieved, automatically confers the benefit of the doubt in most media.

I also love that things went from "I should probably figure out a Twitter alternative" on Saturday to "My Twitter account will probably be nuked for no reason" on Thursday. What a week

It was clear from the jump Musk didn’t understand the site he’d bought, but I’m still a bit surprised he doesn’t grasp that journalists are the main reason Twitter was more relevant than any number of other similar platforms. Can easily imagine looking back on this as a tipping point.

Remember that night that half of Tweeps got laid off and so everyone just stared at Slack until their accounts got nuked? tonight is like that but for reporters

My last two Washington Post stories on Elon Musk before Twitter suspended me and other journalists discussed his flirtation with QAnon and the public data about his private jet:

"Musk did not, however, show how the tracking of his movements led to the incident. More importantly, he ignores the basic fact that freely available flight-tracking websites are a key tool of researchers, journalists, and activists" and have been used "to track Russian oligarchs and other corrupt interests" as well as "monitor military and political activity of public interest. Would he have these opportunities disappear?"
