Maslow—the one from the hierarchy of needs—spent time with the Blackfoot tribe, where he found astounding levels of cooperation, minimal inequality, restorative justice, full bellies, and high levels of life satisfaction. Self-actualization was the norm.

80–90% of the Blackfoot tribe had a quality of self-esteem that was only found in 5–10% of his own population.

He never published his findings out of fear of losing academic standing...

Any site that wants to maximize profit, or is under pressure to maximize profit, and is subject to the kinds of algorithms that currently exist on social media will be under enormous pressure to fire up the outrage machine.

I doubt they will choose otherwise.

I've run a large site and Facebook page for more than a decade. I've seen what drives traffic. I have to actively choose to make less money by not posting outrage inducing things.

Occasionally, I accidentally post a teaser that causes people to react about "those lazy people" and how language is going to hell, with everyone piling on about their pet peeves, and traffic goes through the roof.

If I cared about making money, I'd post things like that every day.

Economics: Humans only value things monetarily.
Sociology: Uh, I don't ...
Economics: Humans are always rational and value is calculated by a complex inner calculus.
Sociology: Uh, Psy, can you help?
Psychology: That's not how humans ...
Economics: ALSO MY SYSTEM WILL GROW EXPONENTIALLY FOREVER!!

Qs worth asking about any social media platform:

- How do they make money, and to what end (purpose vs. profit)?
- How do they mitigate against being bought or taken over by bad actors?
- Do they kick people off for the right reasons (e.g., racists) -- or the wrong reasons (e.g., sex workers)?
- Do they have broad reach?
- Is their code open? If not, why not?
- Are they just starting? If so, what sets them up for success?
