As a newbie #hamradio explorer, decided to get something better than Baofeng (known as "standard").
Motivation:
- Explore new areas such as #aprs
- Better channel management
- Improved audio
- And most important - simply wanted to see how the "proper", "better" and full-featured radio compares to a Baofeng.
Since I usually do not know what I'm doing, didn't want to overspend. Ended up purchasing #anytone AT-D878UV II Plus V2 which arrived earlier this week!
Gearing up for Wednesday night #amateurradio #simplex net in #losangeles on 446.500FM. 8PM. I'll be sending out #aprs packets from #elysianpark.
I've put in a deposit on a Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition. Looks like ham radio was the thing that finally got me to commit to Linux!
Looking forward to using it for:
- Portable operation (POTA, public service, etc)
- Dire Wolf for APRS
- Reading and marking up ham .pdfs
WHICH DISTRO
h/t to @KR4BVU for turning me on to Framework.

Dżizas! Działało, działało i chyba rok temu zdechło.
A ten wygenerowany wczoraj to w ogóle zniknął

I just put my station on #APRS this morning. It is a base station, so it's on all the time. I am still feeling my way around APRS, and I would totally appreciate it if someone would send me a test message, so that I can see if i am receiving messages.
Can somoene send a message to KB8QPT-1 ?
Thanks!
I've added support for local OSM tiles to APRSMap More details will be available soon on my blog at https://www.hamradiotech.de.
#Meshtastic, #Meshcore... There is a more mature system, #APRS . Could it be more valuable as an emergency messaging system? You need a permit to use it, but it shouldn't be to difficult to get one. I wonder, perhaps Meshtastic is nice to get your feet wet, before switching to the real thing.
It's all relatively new to me. There is a lot to learn.

Running an #aprs beacon in the vehicle on 144.800 mHz. Currently at a high spot on the western side of South Mainland, Shetland and noticed my signal was received on Orkney by GM4WMM. That's about 85 miles on VHF through very poor weather conditions.
Just having some fun with #AmateurRadio
I wonder, if I have a basic HT and cheap bicycle, what's the easiest way to get started with a mobile setup? I'm guessing a 3D printed mount, but what else would I need to quickstart operating this way? I'm thinking this could be an excuse to start exploring #APRS, perhaps?
Make sure to post to the APRS Graffiti Wall this #fieldday by sending a ? to GWALL, more info at https://radiorabbit.ca/aprs-wall #hamradio #packetradio #aprs

radiorabbit.caBiking to the ARROW field day site at the Ann Arbor Airport soccer fields. On APRS for the occasion (via APRSDroid) as W8EMV-9

I used to have a little DIY sound interface to connect to my phone and HT so I could do #APRS. Took it apart a while ago to steal the parts because I wasn't actually using it, but it might have been fun to have for this train ride.
There seems to be much I don't know about radio. I find it strange that one of the iGates (WØUPS-15) that most often hears my #APRS packets OTA on VHF sent from my home QTH is located 84 miles (135km) from here, and is not line-of-sight (there's a mountain in the way). Unless I'm not understanding something in the aprs.fi table...
Bounding off the front range foothills maybe? <shrugs>
Experimenting with the #pinpoint software for #APRS this afternoon. Pretty straightforward setup with my soundcard TNC and it likes my garmin glo BT GNSS as well so life is good. I can look at the map AND watch the packets matrix-style. #amateurradio
This looks cool and I can see that many of the #fedihams have already found it!

radiorabbit.caHrmph. I wrote code that generates #APRS packet audio that I should be able to transmit using an FM radio. Well, the generated audio makes direwolf happy (when I feed a file with the waveform to it directly) but when I actually transmit it on-air, nobody wants to digipeat it. I'm out of ideas of what to try next. #HamRadio
