I'm interested in reading studies about how #covid infections affect young #children & #teenagers with #autism.

Especially on how multiple infections can affect #autistic #neurology.

New #subreddit for #Autism.

R/AutismSafeHouse

This sub will NOT allow parents to post things like wishing their #autistic children dead, or talk about how much they hate their children for being autistic.
The purpose is to offer real support for folks on the #ASD #spectrum. It’s not a place for “autism moms” to post angry rants. They already have a sub for that.
So, if you’re #ActuallyAutistic, diagnosed or not, please feel free to join! reddit.com/r/AutismSafeHouse/s

A bit of rant about #asd
I get the impression that putting of so called "Asperger* syndrome" under the umbrella of ASD however makes sense from the diagnostic and systematic point of view, on the other hand made a lot of mess in people's lives.
It causes frustration and hatred from both neurodivergent people people, who are able to express themselves, as well as carers of the people who are unable to function without support.
I had any amount of discussion (sometimes F2F) where parents of severe disabled person directly or indirectly claimed that The Only True Autism is case similar to their child - banging head against wall, non-verbal, uncontrollable when adult and all the people with diagnosis, but who have work, function somehow in the society are sort of impostors.
Even verbal kid, who otherwise can't be left alone for 5 minutes is for them "not enough autistic".
On the other hand, verbal and in old terminology "high functioning" people are annoyed, because of the stereotypes that we are "antisocial geniuses", sometimes psychopaths unable to feel empathy.
Sometimes our diagnosis and needs are invalidated, because we are independent, have jobs and our issues are dismissed as not serious enough. Fact that I don't bang my head against the wall when it is too noisy doesn't make me less on a spectrum.
I would really like to see support for these parents, but also education - that it is spectrum, with several slides, that there are no two identical people.
Really, it is not a martyrdom competition.

*) Yes, Asperger was Nazi and his name shouldn't be used

Ok, so noise-cancelling headphones don't 100% cancel and can't do a thing about pounding vibrations. Considering that I can hear distant ants yawn, I've a feeling my hyperacusis* is going to be somewhat challenged.

*Midweek Factoid: 90% of people with #ASD experience some form of sound sensitivity.

What is the reversal of infodumping? @actuallyautistic
(What would you label "being subjected to or seeking further information on a topic, possibly for current or future deepdive sharing"?)
Very interested in translations or interpretations in other languages, including gestural and/or sign language, if you know any and want to share.

Aw, I just thought of Info dunking. Ah well.
Let info damping be "to rain on someone's misinformation parade." [Maybe dampening? Idk. Linguists take the wheel.]

Last year, during NAIDOC week, I was working with a “difficult” student (according to the school/teachers).

Diagnosed with #ASD, #ADHD, #Dysgraphia, #Dyslexia, & #Dyscalculia, they were facing immense challenges.

Challenges like bullying, feeling inadequate and "stupid", and being so disengaged that they were close to leaving the school system.

The always brilliant & amazing @leaverou on BlueSky.

"Sure, ADHD/ASD can make many things hard (mainly because the world is not built for us — ADHD/ASD folks work GREAT together) but hyperfocus is such a superpower. I owe everything I have ever achieved to it. I have zero discipline. I’m just lucky enough to have “productive” special interests."

@SecurityWriter yes, you must stay informed, even though you can’t trust anything you see in the media. Thanks to the Internet you can now get your news directly from the primary sources, directly from the scientists and other experts who know what is going on better than anyone else.

Re: the “Telepathy Tapes,” I don’t find it difficult to believe at all.

Take three simple scientific facts that are now common knowledge:

a symptom of ASD is that a person is far more sensitive to sensory input than the neurotypical baseline
with AI technology we are able to train machine learning models to find the most subtle patterns in the most noisy signals
any good poker player knows that every person has a “tell,” i.e. subtle physiological changes in a person that occur when they have a winning hand.

So it is incredibly likely that when a parent is thinking something there are subtle physiological changes that “tell” what the parent is thinking, which a child on the Autism Spectrum can learn to detect by virtue of the fact that they are so sensitive to sensory input. It is even more likely that they can pick up on these patterns from someone they have loved and trusted since even before they were born, like their mother.

This morning I ran across (the remnants of) another kindred spirit regarding Mikayla Raines here in #Seattle up at Cal Anderson Park. A shout-out to all my animal-loving brothers and sisters with #ASD. Hang in there. Don't give up. The world needs you. #MikaylaRaines #animal-lovers #empathy

How an autie feels when...
...approached by sales assistants in a shop.
...unexpectedly meeting neighbours in the street.
...juggling the 9432k outdoor sounds everyone else filters out.
...wearing socks with the wrong texture.
...molested by demons & gargoyles.
