**Are Scottish accents really more aggressive? A linguist explains**
Amanda Cole
_“Many presume that Scottish accents sound harsh or, as they are often unfortunately characterised, gruff because of some inherent property: the throaty, fricative sound in loch, the striking glottal stop for “t” as in Fern Brady’s pronunciation of Scottish and the audible r’s in words like car.”_

Does that thing that scousers do now where they turn the last syllable in a sentence into a three-syllable sing-song have a name?
It’s been around a good few years, but no one did it when I studied in Liverpool (92 to 96)

Southerners among worst at spotting fake English accents, study finds
Ian Sample
“Are southern English accents simply easier to fake than others? Goodman thinks not. Instead, he sees cultural evolution at work. A person’s accent is a signal of their social identity, and the history of tensions across the UK could have brought northerners, Scots and others closer together, making them more attuned to outsiders.”

MY RESPONSE:
My father's side of the family, native to Massachusetts for awhile, used to pronounce "aunt" with the "au" sound not just the short "a" even when I used to as a kid from Pennsylvania. So it never sounded totally wrong to me ...
Unique style, all right ... Let's see, per Wikipedia, he was born and raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, where his family had run a hardware store for generations. So, a Pennsylvanian sound. And I like this critic's description of him in an early movie: "lanky young bumpkin with a hesitant manner of speech." Ha!
