#UK age checks on #VPN is perhaps the most ludicrous suggestion ever.
Unless the next step for #OnlineSafetyAct always was exactly this. To make it seem like a logical consequence - optics.
VPNs are one tool among many to strengthen #privacy online, and removing #anonymity from their use deals a severe blow to their purpose.
This was never about #CSAM or any content online in #UK (or anywhere - #ChatControl is different but alike).
It was and is always about control of citizens.
Our lead relay engineer @alexhaydock has increased our stateless #Tor exit relay deployment to 96! (+1 because of the new #RISCV bare-metal node, +1 other we redeployed due to a silly spelling error). We're stress testing our three AMD Epyc 7402P servers that use #Proxmox.
Each one of the 96 Tor exit nodes are diskless Unified Kernel Images, 56MB in total size, using @alpinelinux's alpine-make-rootfs with an absolutely bare minimum number of packages. We'll be publishing more about our new architecture and configuration soon.

"A jury’s partial conviction of Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm illustrates the Trump administration’s selective approach to cryptocurrency policy: slash regulations and end enforcement actions against benefactors, while cracking down on the type of privacy software that was once a fundamental component of the original cypherpunk ideology — long since abandoned by much of the crypto industry. A White House cryptocurrency working group recommendation to expand the Patriot Act to digital asset transactions suggests this is not just a prosecutorial hangover from the Biden administration, but an ongoing priority. Meanwhile, Trump’s SEC is running “Project Crypto”, described as a lucrative “deregulation blitz” for the industry."

Modern art is a disaster area. Never in the field of human history has so much been used by so many to say so little.”

The Internet Wants to Check Your I.D. | The New Yorker
New safety rules require users to verify their identities before gaining access to sites. This spells the end of the relative #anonymity that we’ve come to expect online.

"Hosting a Tor hidden service — also known as an onion site — typically requires in-depth technical skills and manual configuration. With TorServ, you can host a static website anonymously in seconds, without touching any config files."
Looking at the immediate effects of the #UK new #OnlineSafetyAct I can’t help wonder who, exactly, wanted this. It’s an #infosec nightmare come to life, with massive damage being done to individual #safety, #privacy and #security.
No children will be safer by this, none. No citizen. Only those currently in power, when #anonymity is destroyed.
If the #EU persists in pushing for like legislation, the #Internet will truly have been destroyed, with all the economic value it holds.
This is no surprise, so the remaining question is ”Who benefits?”, as always.
Show Your Papers: The #Internet Is About to Change Forever — Ludlow Institute

A crackdown sweeping the globe is replacing the free…
Ludlow Institute"The prosecution’s flailing attempts to navigate around the Blanche memo exemplify the incoherence of the Trump administration’s approach to cryptocurrency enforcement: sweeping regulatory rollbacks that primarily benefit wealthy crypto operators, while simultaneously pushing ahead with aggressive prosecutions of developers like Storm to avoid the appearance of being soft on North Korea or cybercrime more broadly. The result is a prosecution that must somehow prove that Storm failed to implement specific compliance controls, without being able to point to any regulations outlining these controls that he supposedly failed to follow.
With their legal theory in shambles, prosecutors have resorted to tenuous guilt-by-association arguments and mischaracterized evidence. They’ve tried to hold Storm responsible for scams that may not have even touched Tornado Cash, argued that he should be culpable for not helping scam victims in ways that would not have been technically possible, and built a case for intent around chat messages that turned out to be forwarded news inquiries rather than evidence of criminal conspiracy. What remains is less a coherent prosecution than a cautionary tale about the dangers of letting political imperatives drive criminal cases."

Social media never looked interesting before but I'm having more and more the need to interact with people outside my physical bubble, both for diversity and for interest sharing, and mastodon looks great for that. At least I already found interesting people to follow.
I'm very keen on #anonymity, #privacy, #freedom and #empathy they are the cornerstones of a fair (even if not equal) society, IMO.

Schneier on SecuritySome exciting #stigmerge updates to share!
All stigmerge peers are now seeders -- there are no #leechers in official stigmerge releases. Sharing is caring! #veilid private routing mitigates the privacy hazards normally associated with sharing content over public networks directly.
Peers gossip with each other _constantly_, advertising themselves and discovering new neighbors -- and they store these contact lists in the #veilid DHT like a pheromone trail. So even when an original seeder is long gone and goes offline -- if just one of its last-known neighbors is online, future travelers still have a chance to join a live swarm of active peers.
Fetchers can balance downloads among multiple peers, gravitating towards the most productive ones.
It's also super-easy to run stigmerge from an OCI container now (#Docker or #Podman as you like).
Check out the updated README for more details -- and the 0.5.6 release to try these new superpowers out for yourself!
