Fitzsimons Innovation Community strives to expand hub for science and healthcare
“These companies don’t have a lot of money, and they really need that support of people who are helping them start the company, get to (clinical) trials, and see if their drugs or their life-saving technology can actually work.” – Kelly Brough

"Conan the Bacterium" can withstand radiation that could kill a human. Scientists say they’ve found its secret weapon.
From @CNN: "A type of bacteria called Deinococcus radiodurans can withstand radiation doses 28,000 times greater than those that would kill a human being — and the secret to its success is rooted in an antioxidant."
PhD project in #OpenScience, please boost
Deadline 7 Jan.
Join the BioRDM team at #EdinburghUniversity to study Electronic Lab Notebooks in #BioScience! We work alongside bench biologists 'at the coalface'. This PhD will analyse how our colleagues use ELNs, how we and they together can improve their #metadata, and whether using an ELN really leads to more or FAIRer data sharing.
Fuding is competitive, for non-UK citizens.

www.linkedin.comThe BioNavigators website has great #blog posts by Hannah LaMond, Sabrina Daglish, and Madeline Valentine. These posts do a wonderful job of discussing some hurdles in #STEM and #GraduateSchool. This time, though, we tried something different. We asked ChatGPT-3.5 to write about AI's uses, challenges, and ethics in #bioscience. Check out the post and let us know what you think.

@domhenri Wow, those numbers depressing.
Figure 3 should scare everyone who uses antibodies (and hopefully spur them to sanity-check their stainings with additional techniques).
A while ago, Biosciences at Hull started including photos and full names of scientists we cite on lecture slides -- as students make (incorrect) assumptions from surnames and initials.
Now Hubbard, K., Henri, D, and Coates, K. ( ), have published the results.
It's an initiative that's shown some impact on these assumptions, and highlighting the actual diversity of the scientific community to students.
