This week I've been mainly reading, no. 245.
Lynn Nicholas narrative history, The Rape of Europa (1994) tells the story of the plight of art (mainly paintings) under the Nazis & the latter battle to restitute the works to their owners (or not). Its a highly detailed & well-reseached read, and makes it clear why so many art works went 'missing' during the decade ending in 1945. Its clearly written & if occasionally gets bogged down in detail remains a fascinating read.

El EspañolVictor Hugo describes the monotony of a certain area of Paris at the time: lines, right angles, and not a bend or curve to surprise the eye. He reflects that perhaps boredom is even worse than suffering, bringing its own kind of deep despair. And then night falls on the scene, all the lines are dissolved, one thinks of all the crimes committed here, and the soul longs for the return of that rectilinear certainty...

Over on the blog: "I’m often asked, since I’m on the board of the Society of Authors, why legal action isn’t underway in the UK to hold the big tech companies to account for their wholesale and blatant breaches of copyright?"
Looking at this, and at some recent developments in the US which have implications for more than US authors alone.
