Would like to promote the #browser #firefox / #librewolf extension #Ublacklist here. Motivated by seeing a post about #aislop summaries pretty much every where these days.

Ublacklist allows to hide search results from #searchengine results like #Google #ecosia #duckduckgo #bing.

Next to each result is a small block icon which adds the domain to the filter and not 1 link of this site will reappear in your results.

Each time the result of a website is clearly #ai generated I block the whole domain. Last week I searched an issue about CNC milling and 9 out of the 10 first results on duckduckgo had been ai crap that didn't answer any questions but just rephrased a question multiple times.

Probably sysifus work but I'm feeling pretty good about making sure I'm never kicking a second time on basically fake links of fake websites.

Try it! If search engine companies can't do a good job or don't want to, I'm happy I can do it myself and stop them being able to show shit to me.

Lord Caramac the Clueless, KSC

Today there was a Chrome update that undid the hack that allowed me to continue using Manifest 2 extensions. So now I'm trying to use Firefox instead, but the very same tab session with the very same tabs as under Chrome causes FF to fill up all the RAM and spawn an immense number of processes until my entire system slows down to a crawl. Using a tab suspender doesn't seem to help. What can I do? I can't just use fewer tabs, I just don't work that way. If I don't keep all the URLs I use on a regular basis (meaning at least once or twice a month, although I use most of them daily) open in their own separate tabs, I tend to forget they even exist due to my ADHD. Using less than about 70 tabs is simply not an option for me. I remember this used to be perfectly fine with FF a couple of years ago, while Chrome was having trouble as soon as the number of tabs got too large. Eventually, FF became worse and worse, while Chrome's performance under large numbers of open tabs improved significantly, which is mostly why I switched to Chrome in the first place. However, I can't use the web without a decent adblocker (uBO), without an easy to use download manager (DownThemAll), without a tool to save and export my tab session, without an addon to stop websites from disabling right click etc. Manifest 3 made all of those impossible.
So how can I use all of that and still have a huge number of tabs open? Why isn't suspending the tabs working? Why is the addon for suspending tabs so useless?

Update: It seems to work when I manually unload all the tabs. Damn. No wonder Mozilla has lost almost all of its former userbase to Google.

Update 2: No it doesn't. Even with all the AI and tab sorter features disabled and all the tabs paused and unloaded, FF keeps eating RAM.

Update 3: After going through the extended configuration options and setting everything I don't need to "false", FF is finally behaving. It still uses more CPU and RAM than Chrome, but not that much more anymore.

Uncovering a Web3 Interview Scam

A Ukrainian Web3 team's interview process involved cloning a GitHub repository containing malicious components. Analysis revealed the project replaced a legitimate dependency with a malicious NPM package, rtk-logger@1.11.5. This package collected sensitive data, including cryptocurrency wallet information, from popular browsers and uploaded it to an attacker-controlled server. The malware also implemented keylogging, screen capture, and clipboard monitoring. Two other GitHub accounts were found using a similar malicious package. The scam aimed to trick interviewees into executing malicious code, potentially leading to data leaks and asset theft. Developers are advised to exercise caution when handling unknown GitHub projects and to use isolated environments for execution.

»Perplexity – KI-Startup bietet 34,5 Milliarden für Chrome:
Perplexity will Googles Browser übernehmen - trotz begrenzter Finanzmittel.«

#Perplexity offered to buy #Google’s #Chrome #browser for $34.5B. The offer, likely a #marketingstunt, aims to challenge Google’s #websearch #dominance and signal to the judge in the #antitrust case against Google that there is an interested buyer. Its value to Google is in avoiding paying other companies for default placement, making it unlikely Google will sell. spyglass.org/i-offer-to-buy-ju #tech #media #news

“We observed that #Perplexity [an AI-powered answer engine] uses not only their declared #user_agent, but also a generic browser intended to #impersonate Google Chrome on macOS when their declared crawler was blocked.”

“This activity was observed across tens of thousands of domains and millions of requests per day.”
