Today I got to deliver something that's been living in my head for a while: a course on the #identification and #care of #metals in #collections!
If you came along (it was open to Welsh professionals): thank you, I hope you learned something useful to your day-to-day!
If you'd like to do something similar: get in touch, I'd love to do this again.
Now I can briefly stop thinking obsessively about metal and corrosion products...

Happy Halloween!
I've made another #conservation themed (or more accurately IPM themed) pumpkin this year: the SILVERFISH!
Previous years have included woolly bears, clothes moth, and tape. Because of course.
Keep it spooky out there!

This came up on a different platform and I couldn't resist a poll of my own:
Scenario:
You're at a museum, looking at a display case. Inside the case are various museum objects with labels giving context. You also notice another item in the case: a boxy device collecting data on the humidity and temperature inside the case. (It may or may not have a display showing this information, but it's either storing or sending that data somewhere.)
How do you feel about it?
Thanks to everyone who came to my masterclass talk on salvage and disaster kits at the M+H Show today!
I wore a Britney style mic and felt a little like Bill Bailey as a result.
Appeal: does anyone have any juicy photos of museum/collection textiles that I may use in a training session? (With credit, obviously.)
I'm after: packed/stored textiles (stored well or poorly, your choice!)
examples of different types of historic and modern textiles
examples of damage to textiles (stains, tears, pest nibbles, anything!)
identified fibres under a microscope
Grateful for boosts!

Today I was out and about teaching #GLAM people across #Wales about how to best deal with #mould in #collections. Had a lovely time with a great group of people!
A whirlwind trip to Rouen to turn a manuscript page to reduce irreversible light damage in an exhibition.

Managed to fit in an exhibition, the tomb of the heart of Richard the Lionheart in the Cathedral and Les Gros-Horloge.
Every conservator's dream: a #clock that shows not only the time but also the #temperature and relative #humidity!
I wonder how accurate it is.
Thanks #lidl! Watch museum professionals sneak these into storage rooms across the world now...
(Available from 11 May in UK stores. This isn't a paid advert. I'm just a nerd.)

This doesn't surprise me: museums are chronically underfunded and constantly asked to put off basic maintenance and #conservation Good to see it being talked about!
Lots of different figures being thrown around in this article, but basically: #CollectionsCare and #BuildingConservation costs money. Lots of money!

Recently I entertained myself with a little photo shoot of doll sized wedding dresses. I packed them in tiny #acidfree boxes and even made a little costume bag.
Why?
Allegedly because I was writing "Happily Ever After: The Complete Guide on How to Store and Look After Your Wedding Dress" for Preservation Equipment.
(But also because it's fun.)

A great use of #technology for #conservators: the #HoloLens2 is really just a fancy camera on a human but it works really well!
It could also be vital for #training new #conservation professionals. Also imagine this used for virtual courier trips!
I'm tickled by the prospect of adding better lights to the #headset. Collaborating directly with #Microsoft would actually be really cool.

Here’s the reported “fiddler crab on steroids.” Now, although not a fiddler - it’s a blue land crab, Cardisoma guanhumi - I will admit that I would be startled hearing scratching at my office door, opening it to find this not-small asymmetrically-clawed crustacean. A museum curator’s job is never dull. #crustmas #crustacea #crustaceans #crabs #collection #CollectionsCare #digitization #25daysofcrustmas #malacostraca #museumspecimen #decapoda
Every so often we stumble across a specimen record that makes us laugh for days. This is one of them. We recently acquired the South Carolina DNR’s Southeast Regional Taxonomic Center marine collection, and are working to integrate the metadata into our database. #crabs #crustacea #crustaceans #MuseumCollections #museum #CollectionsCare #curation #crustmas #25daysofcrustmas #malacostraca
Folks interested in #preservation and #CollectionsCare (wherever you are and whatever you look after) might like to join the Conserv Community. It's free, chill, quite informal, and open to anyone who cares about #preserving #heritage.
At the moment there's a mix of #conservators, collections managers, techs, #curators, #librarians, #registrars, #archivists, and researchers on there.
It specifically wants people from outside the profession bubble to join, so please do!
New #episode of #thecwordpodcast!
This time we're talking to special co-host Sean Kelly from #PaisleyMuseum (and a number of lovely interviewees across #Manchester and on the #IsleOfMan) about #redevelopments in #museums: from refreshing #galleries to revamping whole sites.

Spoilers: The Crown
Me: OMG, I can't wait for collections care people to use screenshots from The Crown in salvage training.
Also me: Oh fuck no, bubble wrap on paintings!
