Nobody has checked my ticket either. The train is almost empty. And I even installed the Czech rail app to reserve a seat because it was impossible from the DB app.

We stop in Cham. Reading my book, I notice a German shepherd in my peripheral vision. 'Puppy!' I exclaim without thinking. The dog's human looks at me and smiles. Turns out both the dog and the human work for the customs. The dog has smelled something and another human, wearing disposable gloves, goes through a white man's backpack, opening his toiletries and smelling them. They find nothing.

#CrossBorderRail almost 10/10, @jon ! (Okay, offer is poor, one train pair per day, but at least they tried to make that one train as good as they can.)

Despite a public holiday and 5.30 a.m. in the morning, #Craiova is really vivid. Many people waiting at the station, a couple of people out on the streets.

I spent an excellent night in the comfortable first class couchettes, but since it's a public holiday in Romania, sadly I didn't find any food so far.

Amongst amazing class 41 locomotives, the station surprised me with a vending machine for books. An amazing idea for travelers.

Since everything around the station in Craiova is still closed, I took a seat in the waiting hall, waiting for my advertised #CrossBorderRail train to #Vidin .

If you want to go to Bruxelles-Midi this afternoon you can go f*ck yourself or pay a shitload of money for an over expensive train. I miss the former Intercity Brussels regarding ticketing… #CrossBorderRail

The journey continues with a night train from #Bucarest to #Budapest. This service runs 4 times a day, with ample choice between leaving at 3pm (continuing to Vienna) to midnight, with journey times between 15 and 18 hours (mind the timezone difference!). I took the 6pm arriving at 9am.

The 4-bed couchettes come into 2 flavors, with a "premium" one being wider. Good legroom while sitting.

With 26 intermediate stops, this train also sees a lot of day intercity traffic. #CrossBorderRail

There aren't *that many* more #CrossBorderRail lines for me to investigate now...

... but there are enough for one final big tour

It'll start 6th June, and the route is now set!

In some efficiency aberration, or still driven by #CrossChannelRail wanderlust, the Birdy is fixed up for the summer. New chain, adjusted brakes, more secure mud guards. Makes a change from doing it the eve of departure!

It can cope with 1000km in Poland, Romania etc. during #CrossBorderRail in June and July now
