Well, it’s almost 7:30 AM, I’m nauseated, so I’ve been doing some light reading.

And it appears that there are more people who also said “fuck it” to systems in play going on in the world right now and are also rolling with the punches while trying to build better ways of doing things. One of those people is English professor Jem Bendell. I’m not sure yet if I agree with everything he’s doing/believes in (but then again, do you ever?) because I’m still exploring and contemplating all that he has to say, but he did publish a fascinating piece on his site back in February 2024 about deep adaptation to climate crisis, massive social change, and collapse, and how sometimes saying fuck it and making a huge life change in light of all of that is the least risky option.

Given everything that’s going on politically here in the States, I think it’s well worth the read and to do some thinking about, even if you don’t agree with most or all of what he says.

I have a proposal for a Europe-wide* experiment, that aims to bring together the movements around solidarity and ecology in order to build up our material infrastructure.

**I'm looking for collaborators**, please DM me, and please boost this toot!

Here it is briefly:

We try to raise 50 000 000€ over about 5-10 years and give that money as 1000 gifts of 50k€ each to new collectives for setting up housing cooperatives and land communes. The main vehicle for the fundraiser would be crowdfunding with focus on a high volume of small, recurring donations.

For example, this could be achieved with 200 000 donors, donating 5€/month on average for 50 months, or 4,17 years. That's 250€/person over four years.

Each recipient collective would make a legal pact with us or a trusted third party to ensure that the property will not be sold back to the market for financial gain. Additionally collectives would go through screening to ensure alignment with a shared vision.

*Even though internationalism on a global scale is important, I believe it makes sense to focus this effort geographically, to be able to have location-connected synergies between collectives.

In the end we would have boosted the 'ecosystem' with a network of maybe 10-30k members and created 1000 hubs for social and ecological organizing. Additionally, we would have built up a network of Commons, that can help us gain a better understanding of this new, old, paradigm.

The leftist space is full of ideas and people with motivation to work and organize together, to try new forms of living and care, to grow food and to steward the land. I want to see this potential realized, but I'm afraid most of it will not happen unless we cooperate on a broader, international scale to push things forward. I think what is needed is funding campaign that also spreads the concept.

Indeed, capitalism has wrought its own demise and given us the chance to undertake the construction of a new society on the ruins of the old one. Breaking Together encourages us to think about collapse in ways that are profound, possibility-expanding and startlingly original. Bendell’s “post-doom” perspective has the potential to change individual lives, upend organisational strategies and give birth to whole new social movements.

Bendell advocates for an ideal of “ecofreedom”. This moves beyond obvious ideas, such as reconnecting with nature, to encompass supporting youth climate activism and decolonial, resource-preserving movements in the Global South.

The post-doom approach also calls for embracing a “positive disintegration” of self and values, to refocus one’s mind, and entire existence, on things that really matter.

Our current predicament largely stems from wrong ideas about the separation between people, as well as between people and the planet. These ideas have been used for centuries to justify exploitation and oppression. Our current predicament is the result of them and the power structures they have led to.

The DA Forum actively seeks to replace these mistaken narratives with more connected and loving responses, and with better ways of relating to people and the other-than-human world. We welcome all who come here seeking these peaceful and loving responses, and actively discourage community members from promoting non-loving or violent views.
