Provocative questions from #DoTheMath blog post[1]:
- Does it seem wrong to impose limits on humans?
- Should humans get whatever they want?
- Are limits evil, when applied to humans?
- Is the only way to be “fully human” to live outside of biophysical/ecological restrictions?
- Does this mean, in effect, that we will never voluntarily reduce or deprive humans of food?
- Should it be: food will make babies until other factors beyond our control intervene?

@gerrymcgovern I think you might find it interesting to check out the first video (or however many catch your interest) of this playlist on "Metastatic Modernity" by Dr Tom Murphy of UCSD.
Murphy has been writing on energy, economy, modernity, and their intersection with planetary limits for quite a while at his Do The Math blog, and although that started in a pretty standard "green tech" position, as he started to look at things from a deeper, and rather darker, perspective which in 2021 he turned into an e-textbook _Energy and Human Ambition on a Finite Planet_.
Anyway, sorry for dropping in from nowhere.

"Because human mental models are exceptional ... We begin to live in our models ... the classic blunder of treating the map as the territory. ... in a sense [this] is the whole point of a brain: a speedy shortcut-machine that often serves well enough to stand in for reality.
... our tendency to “live the model” has become ever-easier to practice, in a self-reinforcing way, having reshaped our environment to conform to our shortcut mental models"
The Third-of-a-Pound Burger flop
"Ah, fractions. Who needs 'em? Not burger devotees. According to Canadian news outlet CBC, the famous McDonald's Quarter Pounder burger once had a larger cousin, the Third-of-a-Pound Burger...."
That's why it's a bad idea to argue online.

Ejagfest 2024 - I was there! And it was great! Good vibes only, so many nice people. Was amazing to meet Carl Forhan from Songbird in person, got to shake hands with Ian McCranor who played Angus in Kasumi Ninja, had a look at the final version of Jumping at Shadows, played Tempest 2000 on an old Jag kiosk unit ... so much nerdy fun in one day. Wow. Cheers everyone, have a splendid weekend as well!

New firmware update for Jaguar GD. Finally World Tour Racing and VidGrid run (WTR does crash between races seemingly, but oh well, at least it's playable at all).

Selbst Markus hat es gelesen: 151 Millionen Tonnen CO2 von den geforderten 180 bis 2030 könnte der Verkehrsbereich durch 5 simple Maßnahmen einsparen.
Johannes Vogel:
DoTheMath is one of my favorite blogs.
It started out as a physics professor using "back of the envelope" calculations to estimate various effects and solutions of climate change, but lately has taken an eye to existential topics like fate vs determinism.
The author, TomMurphy, is a professor emeritus of the departments of Physics and Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego
2024 U.S. election
If no presidential candidate wins 270 electoral votes, the House chooses the president with each state getting one vote. As of today, election deniers sit in 36 House delegations. #DoTheMath

"Can Atari K-O 3DO?" Well, we know the answer to that. But in December 1993, that was indeed a good question asked in this headline inside of Popular Science. At that time, it's wasn't already clear just how limited the Jaguar's launch would turn out to be, and even after that, the Jag sold a bit better than the 3DO for some months - which isn't much, still . Also, this little bit was placed in an article about the 3DO, and you gotta agree that this picture of their crew is great!
So celebrate the Jaguar's 30th anniversary, enjoy the good and mediocre games, heck, maybe even some of the not-so-good ones. And remember that the Jag had a lot of potential and did not start out as a flop. If you want to read more about its history, you might like to look at my book Clipped Claws. It's free. And in any case: Keep doing the Math!
