Здравствуйте, дорогие друзья! С школьных лет мы знаем, что вода является проводником электрического тока. При этом дистиллированная вода не проводит ток, а вода с примесями — прекрасно проводит. Я провёл эксперимент, в котором нет ничего необычного, но он наглядно показывает, что вода способна передавать и осмысленные сигналы, например данные в ASCII-кодах. Мы будем использовать ретротехнику — компьютеры на процессорах 386, но повторить суть эксперимента можно и на современном оборудовании. Это небольшой пример, который напоминает нам о том, что вода электропроводна. Под катом — фото и видео составляющих эксперимента и пояснения.

Hace un tiempo conocí eXoDOS, una biblioteca de más de 7000 juegos para DOS compilados y configurados para correr con DOSBox, con una interfaz gráfica para organizarlos.

Lo malo era que esa interfaz estaba sólo disponible para Windows, y era lentísima. Cuando intenté usarla con Wine, la lentitud se multiplicó varias veces al punto de ser inusable.

Pero finalmente sacaron un patch para Linux, que trae una interfaz un poco más limitada que la de Windows pero es super liviana, y permite hacer lo más importante, que es correr los juegos y consultar manuales y otros documentos asociados a los juegos.

[Перевод] Декодируем 90-ые: реверс-инжиниринг и криптография на заре разработки ПО

В августе 2020 года к нам обратился клиент с кэшем из заблокированных документов QText из середины 90-х, пароль для которых он утерял. QText — это редактор из времён DOS, использовавшийся для обработки иврита и английского текста. Написан он на Pascal и был выпущен где-то за 15 лет до того, как мы с @Elisha занялись обратной разработкой. В этой статье мы опишем весь процесс анализа тех зашифрованных документов и выполним реверс-инжиниринг программы DOS. Надеюсь, нам удастся раскрыть некоторые особенности ранней разработки потребительского ПО в Израиле. В частности, мы хотим показать, как в те времена реализовывалась криптография. Ещё одна наша цель — это сохранить описанные здесь знания и инструменты — многие из которых едва дотянули до нашего времени.

Installed Windows 3.1 on my 486 last night ^^ Dedication to the whole playing retro games in real retro gear! I’m getting Myst installed for my first playthrough and was surprised to find it’s a requirement.

Turns out drivers for video and audio are quite the tricky ones when you need SVGA support on a VESA card and audio from a SB Awe64. Both are required to play the game properly.

I’ll need to find working drivers for my S3 Trio64v2/DX card as well as something that is actually willing to install wave support for the Awe64.

I'm trying to figure out the best DOS configuration for emulation and maybe real hardware, too. Right now, I am considering IBM DOS 5.02 upgraded to PC DOS 7 Rev. 1 (2000). You get an IBM branded DOS-Editor, but still all the nice tools from the future, like DELTREE.EXE, DEFRAG, PC DOS-Shell 7.0 or Windows Undelete. Seems to be the best overall DOS package...

Any other ideas / suggestions?

OK, this is so "bad" is just have to share it. I just stumbled over the "PUNICA" game from 1993. The game is just horrible, even the disk is already kinda depressing with its black / grey colours. This is a German game. NO FUN!

"Läuft nur unter DOS" ... don't even think about wanting anything fancy you f'ing brats!"
