Worrying sight out at some of my old study sites. It's been an incredibly dry summer/autumn and I'm seeing quite a lot of mortality of Banksia marginata (Silver Banksia). This species is already suffering recruitment pressures from seed predation and small population sizes but could extreme drought events like this be another nail in the coffin for these populations? #botany #ClimateChange #drought #ecology
This week’s CMOR photo is from Morton County, #Kansas.
“Starting to get dry, but not unusually dry. Had great moisture in November that is carrying us through. Green wheat looks fantastic. Most native grass is breaking dormancy, most trees and shrubs are leafed out or beginning. All we need is a good rain and everything will be great for crops and wildlife. Pheasants in the ditches and bobwhites whistling.”

Huge respect for a Polish #RadioKolor radiostation for not praying for sunny weather all the time and announcing rain with comments: it's going to rain but it's good for environment. #radiostation #weather #drought

**Extreme drought contributed to barbarian invasion of late Roman Britain, tree-ring study reveals**
“_Researchers argue that Picts, Scotti and Saxons took advantage of famine and societal breakdown caused by an extreme period of drought to inflict crushing blows on weakened Roman defences in 367 CE. While Rome eventually restored order, some historians argue that the province never fully recovered._”

University of CambridgeDrought worsened in New Mexico this week as the state’s basins continue to have very low snow water equivalent levels. Low snowpack levels over the winter have dried out vegetation, which could lead to wildfires. Parts of the state are in a red flag fire warning as of April 17.

Before Trump these maps usually had a discussion that came with it describing drought from a regional perspective. Sadly no more. I wonder how long this tri-lateral product from input from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will continue!
Drought expanded slightly in small pockets of the West, the Plains, and Florida, while easing in the Northeast, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Drought (D1-D4) covers 38.81% of the continental US, an increase of 0.34 points from last week.
