#bookspotting on the bus to #ESTEC today morning: a younger colleague engrossed in "Leviathan Wakes", the first book in the expanse series.
Also someone reading an unknown (Portuguese possibly? But I may be wrong - it's not Spanish and not French, I think) book on their phone.
ESTEC main gate. Fog.
Seems like a good day to drink my one bottle of Parabolic Pale Ale, brewed by my friend @DetlefKroeze for the 2024 #ESTEC Open Day, with a label designed by another good friend, @Merlyn
And very tasty it is too – Prost!
(Note the other elixir to the left – also made using brewer’s yeast, that one’s for breakfast )
Bye, #Nederlands, country of #windmills and two days of not actually experiencing rain despite very different weather forecasts.
Ariane 6 upper stage visits ESA’s temple of boom. (Love this!)
On the road
Home from Edinburgh last night & today involves a 600km drive from Heidelberg to Noordwijk, which I’m halfway through.
Heading to ESA’s #ESTEC for an event tomorrow celebrating the tenth anniversary of the landing of Philae on Comet 67P/C-G, one of many highlights of the iconic Rosetta mission.
Will be good to see many friends & colleagues again, & the bike is in the car, so weather permitting, I’ll get some flatland cycling in too

Made a last pre-move visit to #ESTEC today, in part to hand back a laptop charger that I’d forgotten about
Was kindly greeted at reception by the highest representative of the establishment, Micky the Space Cat, who has been at the place even longer than my 15 years
Saw a few of my science colleagues too & said farewell for now … but I know we’ll be in touch & that I’ll be back soon enough
@markmccaughrean Thanks for having explained the #science you (et al.) were doing at #estec. I followed you from twitter to here.
I get it's a special day when one empties and leaves the office for good. I hope to continue reading from you here, but it's also fine if you want to give it a break. Thanks Mark.
(*) But also thanks for the NL road biking, the photography, the cat, etc...
End of an era
After 15 years, yesterday was my last at #ESTEC as an ESA staff member*, & as is my longstanding habit, it ended with me cycling home late at night
Well, I am an astronomer, after all
It has been a privilege, & there is much & there are many I will miss
But I’m not retiring: next, a move to Germany , science with #JWST, talks & tours, writing a book, & many Space Rocks events & projects in development
Looked up from my #JWST data reduction at 23:45 this evening, ready to leave work
Checked the radar first: a big band of rain was just about to arrive
Waited for it to pass & finally exited #ESTEC at 01:30, home at 02:00
Other traffic encountered during my 12km ride through the polders:
1 bike
2 cars
3 walkers
And #Tigger insisted on a garden patrol as soon as I closed the front door
Thanks to everyone who came to the ESA Open Day at #ESTEC yesterday, everyone who volunteered to make it a great day out, & to everyone who presented & spoke, not least at our #SpaceRocks stage
It was a great pleasure to present our new #JWST Orion images there & to sign (so many ) posters afterwards
And to my friends & Space Rocks showrunners, @alexandermilas & John O’Sullivan, thanks for this daft mug, an instant family heirloom
When you come to work and see you co-worker catching up on all the sleep you are missing this week
After too many nights looking out over the dunes from #ESTEC, a much needed decompression this evening – dinner at the Wassenaar beach with the family at sunset.
A beautiful place on the sea just 5km from my front door & every time I’m here, I think I should come far more often. Like daily.
Oops – forgot to post this earlier
A calm sunset at #ESTEC this evening, after which many more pixels were cleansed of their high energy affliction.
A fleeting moment in time – Friday evening at the office.
Sunset clouds at #ESTEC.
Stuck in the seemingly infinite purgatory of cleaning artefacts from almost 3 billion pixels worth of images.
Ugh
