Today in Labor History February 11, 1953: Cold War: U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower denied all appeals for clemency for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The government executed them at Sing Sing in 1953. They had been convicted of espionage for the USSR. Their sons, Michael and Robert Meeropol (adopted by Abel Merepol, composer of the anti-lynching song “Strange Fruit,”), maintained their parents’ innocence. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, decoded Soviet cables showed that their father had collaborated. They continued to fight for the mother’s pardon, but Obama refused to grant it.

Former #Democrat favoring towns of #WhiteWorkingClass #Voters flipped en masse for promises of glorious #Trumponomics in 2024.

In #NewCastle PA where the last #GOP President they voted in was #Eisenhower, the low-income voter base majority pinned hopes on #DJT, praying he goes after immigrants, but doesn’t slash their #welfare benefits.

The chances their political shift will personally payoff are slim, and few seem to think they have much to lose by abandoning #Democrats, as the political party’s promises to help white people like themselves began to ring hollow.

New Castle was a bastion for Democratic votes up until this year. But in larger Lawrence County, the shift toward the GOP has been ongoing. White, working class Americans were increasingly drawn to Republican candidates, in part because of their messaging on security and immigration. According to Census data, White residents make up three-fourths of New Castle’s population, while Black residents account for 10 percent. The population also includes 10 percent of residents who identify as mixed race and 5 percent who are Hispanic.
City Administrator Chris Frye, a Republican and former mayor of New Castle, said he expects GOP leaders will push for some changes to how federal programs are administered. But Frye urged his party to show “empathy” when it comes to determining the actual benefits that people receive. “I think it would be stupid to just take something away,” Frye said. “We would have mass chaos. Mass homelessness ... so nationally, I don’t think it is going to be a situation where they are taking away from people.” Detractors worry that New Castle residents will come to regret their decisions to vote GOP.

...also acting as if literally every single president in all of American history wasn't a criminal. Washington opposed his King, Abraham Lincoln sentenced a reporter to death and rescinded most constitutional rights (and started a Civil War), HW Bush's father (Prescot) sold oil to the Nazis and helped murder Kennedy, Kennedy authorized the Bay of Pigs, W Bush blew up two three American buildings and blamed it on some brown people, Obama did Reagan Iranian Contra Part 2: Fast and Furious (CIA backed gun running) and Trump assassinated an Iranian general and warp sped the most dangerous drug into peoples' arms.

If people truly understood how the world worked, they'd keep their head downs, ignore most of it, and make a nice Thanksgiving meal for the people who really matter in their lives.

The US #polio epidemic peaked in 1952: 57,000+ cases, 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with paralysis.

Dr. Jonas #Salk developed a polio vaccine in 1955. (At one point in the #1950s survey respondents found him more recognizable in this country than Dwight #Eisenhower.)

Within two decades, domestic transmission of polio was wiped out in the #US.

Polio never reached natural herd immunity, it was eradicated by #vaccines.
