Today's poem:

To the Etruscan Poets
- by Richard Wilbur

Dream fluently, still brothers, who when young
Took with your mother's milk the mother tongue,

In which pure matrix, joining world and mind,
You strove to leave some line of verse behind

Like still fresh tracks across a field of snow,
Not reckoning that all could melt and go.

Etruscan rhyton in the shape of a dog's head, terracotta, 475 BCE.

I had to look 'rhyton' up. It's an ancient, animal-shaped vessel used for pouring liquids. Since rhytons normally have an opening on each end, this one is actually upside-down. In any case, the potter who made it was a very fine artist.

A DNA study shows that the Etruscans, a pre-Roman civilization in Italy, originated from the steppes of Eurasia, contradicting previous beliefs. Their cultural and genetic diversity influenced the Romans greatly.

"..a discovery that will rewrite history & 1 which more than 60 experts from all over the world are already working on," archaeologist Jacopo Tabolli told #ANSA in early November, describing "absolutely unique" treasure trove accompanied by incredible quantity of inscriptions in Etruscan & #Latin - shedding new light on how much the #Etruscans influenced the civilization that superseded & virtually wiped them out - as well as thousands of coins, votive offerings.

Before #Rome, the main #civilization in northwest #Italian peninsula was the #Etruscans. The population were absorbed into Rome as citizens and brought the proto-Greek alphabet. This became Rome’s #Latin alphabet after it was reversed in order and direction.

They called themselves the #Rasenna. It’s easy to read their name if you read the proto-Greek letters right to left or in a mirror image.

#LEPONTIC, the (almost) forgotten, written language of the #Celts

Long before the #Roman #Empire and #Caesar's conquest of #Gaul, #Celtic tribes living on the southern edge of the Alps, through contact with the #Etruscans, adopted the #Alphabet and adapted it to their own language, giving rise to the ‘#Lugano’ alphabet – also known as the ‘Lepontic’ alphabet.

Today I took a virtual live tour of the Etruscan collection in the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam (still can't quite believe no one told me there is an archaeology museum on either of my visits to Amsterdam) so here's one of my photos from Villa Giulia, the National Etruscan Museum in Rome. This charming young child is depicted with the amulet that Etruscan children kept around their necks. #Etruscans #archaeology
