Mastodon CEO #Eugen #Rochko has spoken out about the significant moderation changes announced by #Meta on Tuesday,
which will see the social networking giant removing fact-checking across its apps in favor of a crowdsourced community notes feature,
similar to X’s.

The Mastodon founder, whose app competes with X and Meta’s X rival, Instagram Threads,
called Meta’s changes “deeply troubling”
and “a concern to anyone with a conscience.”

He also warned Threads users who cross-post from Threads to Mastodon via Threads’ fediverse-sharing feature that
Mastodon will take action on hate speech
and any Threads account violating Mastodon’s existing policies.

Following the announcement of Meta’s loosened content moderation rules,
which affect LGBTQ communities and other marginalized users,
many Mastodon users wanted to know what this meant for the open source, decentralized social network,
given its connection with Threads.

Last June, Meta opened up its fediverse-sharing feature to all Threads users
after earlier beta testing in the U.S., Canada, and Japan.

The feature lets Threads’ users enable an option that will publish their posts directly on Mastodon as well,
allowing them to reach a broader audience.

Rochko previously touted Threads’ federation,
saying the move made the open source Mastodon
a “far more attractive option.”

He has also spoken about how Meta’s adoption of the underlying ActivityPub protocol,
which powers Mastodon and other federated servers,
was a validation of the move to decentralized social media.

However, not all in the fediverse are in universal agreement on Mastodon’s integration with Threads.

Hundreds of smaller Mastodon servers block Threads,
which means their users can’t connect with Threads users or vice versa.

over violations of Community Standards and other moderation and privacy issues.)

#mastodon is no thread to #threads, just looking at the numbers. And #meta cannot extinguish #mastodon. As #eugen correctly pointed out, in the worst case #mastodon will be as it is now, not integrating with #threads.

Is joinmastodon.org just not adding any more instances? I've officially been trying to get a response for 6 months now, and now the Mastodon App is promoting mastodon.social as the "main" instance. I am so confused. My instance could hold plenty more folks than we've got right now, whereas Mastodon.social constantly gives me error codes on federation. It's just frustrating, since it's making it hard for Mastodon to achieve the whole decentralized platform thing.

Is there no standards committee for the Mastodon aspects of ActivityPub?
Wonder if the ActivityPub comittee should take it up or if it's ok to let the Mastodon experiment continue to evolve independentlt under #Eugen. Others can federate with it and experiment with their own subset of #ActivityPub and the #Mastodon #API / #protocol I guess.

As of the moment it appears 111 **known** instances have defederated to some degree from Mastodon.social. Most likely unknown instance count is much higher.

People are claiming this is a result on the article I wrote, which largely cited facts with photo evidence and effectively accused Eugen of caving to a Nazi's agenda.

I do **not** want to see anyone defederating from mastodon.social. However, my article presented the facts, made no suggestion to anyone to defederate. If those those facts cause people to get mad with Eugen and defederate, so be it, thats his fault for not being a better person, for not having a discussion about his decisions. I wont take blame simply for exposing truths, the reprocusions are on him not me.

The irony is what is happening to him is the same thing happening to me as explained in that article. The difference is what is happening to me is largely fueled by lies which Ive disproven. Cant say the same about Eugen

Anyway, I do hope all of you will stop defederating and start talking. I'd much rather see people try to talk to Eugen and tell him why he is wrong and get him to be better than anything else. Perhaps stand up to the misinformation you hear as well and do some fact checking so #QOTO doesnt get wrongly accused of lies while your at it.
