Ich versuche die Funktionen der iOS Geräte zu kategorisieren, aus Nutzersicht. iPhone kommt ja von Telefon, und hat sein Dasein der #Kommunikation zu verdanken. Das ist die wichtigste Kategorie, sie umfasst telefonieren - wo ein Umstieg („de-apple“ oder #unplugtrump) nicht komplex sein dürfte. Dann kommen #iMessage (abgeschaltet, aber da tut‘s schon weh) und #FaceTime (naja) und… #Email (#iCloud alias Apple ID). Anderes ist ursprünglich nicht dem originären Zweck des Geräts zugedacht…

Urgh, #FaceTime has been failing with the audio just dropping out or changing to loud buzzing. The AirPod bug where my phone starts playing music as soon as I put them back in the charging case is back too.

Amazing how little quality there is in Apple's software now. Seems to be across the board too. Guess worrying about on time delivery more than delivering working products might not be the best plan...

@xoron I don't want to discourage you at all - in fact I think your goal is not just noble but also worth aspiring to.

My recommendation is always to scout out existing solutions, protocols and standards and see if those can be salvaged / used and if not, reason why. #PGP/MIME may seem crusty but a good UI can make it easy. Same.goes for #OMEMO & #OTR...

But whatever you do, please "DO NOT DIY ENCRYPTION!"

Instead delegate it to drop-in libraries (i.e. crypto++ for C++) that are well, maintained and getting audited.

Prioritize features early on and make a decision what you want and if/how these can be accomplished. If necessary, have different modes / functions one has to context-switch (i.e. videocalling can't work in an airgapped network unless your callers are in the same (W)LAN).

If possible choose to stay platform-independent in terms of tech, so like #WebCall, #JitsiMeet, etc. you can simply package that up with nw.js... (Except if you need like a minimalist, (n)curses-style TUI tool like #enc)

User-test early on. Espechally with "#TechIlliterates", if you can.

Focus on a #MVP (minimum viable product) early on.

Write #documentation early on since that'll remove headaches. And I don't just mean #CommentYourCode but go deep and explain in detail why you chose something. This will help not just you.

In terms of "scouting existing solutions" I'd recommend to take a look not just at #JitsiMeet & #WebCall, but also #Briar, #ServalMesh, @monocles / #monoclesChat, @gajim / #gajim and @micahflee's #OnionShare.

Make yourself a list what you like and dislike from those.

Same with #Linphone, @zulip / #Zulip, #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Threema and even #WeChat, #FacebookMessenger, #iMessage, #FaceTime and god forbid #Skype, #MicrosoftTeams as well as #Slack.

Don't be afraid if your #App can't tick all the boxes at first release. Rather feel free to slowly ibtegrate them.

Needless to say I do sincerely wish you good luck and only the best in terms of success.

Interesting: I just got multiple messages about a new Mac added to my #Facetime / #iMessage Account. This is not the first time. While I have many #Apple devices, none of them was powered down for longer than a few hours in months.
I recently changed PW, I have 2-factor-Auth, Yubi-key, advanced security on, so I‘m **feeling** secure, but I‘m still irritated.
Malfunctions(?) like these reduce #security because they train users to ignore warnings.

Fun fact: if you're getting pulled into a group call via FaceTime and you know it's spam, you can block the numbers all at once.

Tap the incoming call banner, go to the information button in the top right, and scroll down to the block all option below the list of numbers.

Apple #Facetime Screen Sharing has to be the worst, most buggy feature #Apple has ever released. It literally fails 9/10 times for me. VERY enraging, because it would be very useful if it worked.

News is finally reporting on the national outage primarily affecting AT&T customers (myself included), which is bad as many businesses use AT&T as they are a reliable GSM carrier (at least until today).
