#Trump, #Musk, #Putin, #Netanjahu, #Erdoğan, #Orban, #LePenn, and #Kickl are #populist #fascists. There, I said it publicly.
Many more western politicians have clear fascist, illiberal tendencies, including previous #FPÖVP chancellors and current governors (Austrian #federalism does not work any more and needs to be severely limited to get back to a functioning government).
[https://www.derstandard.at/story/3000000021253/was-kickl-als-volkskanzler-bedeuten-wuerde is a good summary of some reasonable criteria for spotting #fascism, and https://www.diepresse.com/19301692/haben-wir-es-den-faschisten-zu-leicht-gemacht gives more insight into the Austrian variant. https://www.aaup.org/news/professors-are-not-enemy-fascists-are%C2%A0 gives links to the current US government fight against academia.]
The result of this toot is probably that I _really_ shouldn't be traveling to the #US, #Israel, or #Turkey with their current governments. Luckily, I still dare write such statements publicly in Austria and the wider EU. If I really have to get into political trouble, then let it be because I denounce fascism and oppose the abuse of technology to build surveillance states driven by fear. I will not fight with violence, but I can and will fight it with words.

If the #Trump admin doesn’t comply with the #law & provide the agreements made with the Salvadoran government, what will they do?
They can’t impeach with #Republicans controlling both chambers of #Congress.
Even if they then sue & win, Trump has shown he won’t abide by any court orders, not even orders from #SCOTUS.
There is no enforcing body willing or able to hold him accountable.

They might be trying to use the commerce clause to justify their stopping states’ laws.
Per the EO —
“… when States target or discriminate against out-of-State energy producers by imposing significant barriers to interstate and international trade, American energy suffers…”
The crazy thing about that is the Constitution gives Congress the power to “to regulate commerce… among states,” not POTUS or his AG.
This man is an idiot
#Trump: “The #states are just an agent of the #FederalGovernment”
American #federalism divides power between the national & state govts.
It's literally the basis of the #UnitedStates’ system of government & he can even read about it on freaking Wikipedia.
Also, apparently #Republicans only believe in #StatesRghts when Democrats have power in the Executive or Legislative branches.
But, tbh, Federalism is even better as it goes even deeper into the local level.
I mean, it's not just about sharing resources; it's about people having real control over their own communities and making decisions that affect them directly.
It feels even more authentic and effective to me.

The Kyiv IndependentAmerican Federalism Today: Perspectives on Political and Economic Governance by Michael J. Boskin, 2024
What are federalism's challenges and opportunities today?
The framers of the US Constitution enumerated specific powers for the federal government, leaving all else under the purview of states or the people.
I recently read an excellent article by David Kauders FRSA arguing for federalism in UK political governance . ( RSA Journal 2nd quarter 2024 …I’m a slow reader .) Just because it was excellent doesn’t imply that I agree with his views .He was reflecting on what seems like a continual descent in respect for UK politics and politicians .

10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
Executive Orders by a President over an individual state's water system are powerless. The U.S.A. is not a top-down unitary government. We have #Federalism in which states have great authority over their own affairs.
This is off-topic, but I think it is such a strong and well-written statement that it deserves to be read by more people:
Attorney General James Releases Joint Statement with 10 State Attorneys General: State and Local Law Enforcement Cannot Be Commandeered for Federal Immigration Enforcement:
NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James,…
New York State Attorney GeneralIn the latest edition of #itgrrlReadsLegislation, I’m down a bit of a #RabbitHole relating to the singular vs plural usage of “United States” [1] & I’m fascinated /repulsed by this sort of article:
“The” vs. “These”
https://theacru.org/2023/11/15/the-vs-these/
The d00d is writing on the American Constitutional Rights Union website () but despite this mostly invokes the US Declaration of Independence
to “support” his “argument” – but it’s clear he’s only actually interested in “states rights”
He says:
“That brings us to the topic of this brief, “the” vs. “these.” We often hear people say “the United States of America.” I would offer that is not the correct way of referring to our nation. The correct way would be “these United States of America.””
He also fixates on capitalisation in the Declaration of Independence:
“In the closing paragraph of our Declaration of Independence, Jefferson refers to the gathered body of 56 as “Representatives of the united States of America.” In that phrase you will notice that “united” is not capitalized, but States is.”
Followed by some hand-wavy dismissals:
“Furthermore, you will see that Jefferson uses the language of “United Colonies,” and, yes, “United” is capitalized, and in several instances he says “Free and Independent States,” using capitalization. This is why reading the entire Declaration of Independence is vital to understanding the construct, foundation, which would establish our rule of law, the US Constitution.”
(but don’t worry about that bit ‘coz it doesn’t support his “argument” )
It’s super interesting to me that the US Constitution consistently uses “the United States” – not once does it use “these United States” (I checked )
Nor does the phrase “these United States” appear in the Declaration of Independence [2], although the phrases “the thirteen united States” (once) & “the united States” (once) are used, along with “these Colonies” (3 times), “these States” (3 times), “these Colonies” (once), & “these United Colonies” (once).
The phrase is also absent from both the US Constitution [3] & the Bill of Rights [4].
For someone writing on a website allegedly devoted to upholding “Constitutional rights”, he’s pretty sloppy in his selective quoting…
But of course, this d00d & the org whose website he’s published on aren’t particularly interested in upholding the combination of Declaration of Independence, Constitution, & Bill of Rights in their entirety. They’re doing what fundamentalists always do – cherry-picking the bits of “sacred texts” that support their bigotry & biases to further their ideological agenda while rejecting anything that comes after their arbitrary purity cut-off date as being an something pushed by “the progressive socialist left” (lol, as if that actually exists in modern-day mainstream US politics)
Interestingly, referring to the United States as a plural entity was much more common in the very early days of the republic – in the form of “the United States are…” Later, usage shifted to “the United States is…” This shift seems to have occurred after the US civil war.
The use of “these United States” was actually common until the late 1800s / early 1900s (as recorded in court proceedings), so that particular shift doesn’t seem to have been related to the civil war. I guess courts take a while to catch up with popular usage.

This drives me crazy.
When I post something like, “Here is what blue states can do at the state level to move forward on a policy issue, someone will whine, “You’re leaning people in red states behind!” as if we are all supposed to act like lobsters in a tank holding each other down.
We should be encouraging states to move forward on their own.Several programs of the New Deal were based on what was being successfully done by a state.
States can be a progressive laboratory.
