A nice feeling - Upgrade Blog Instance version

And success. Thank you to @matt and the @write_as team - all went perfectly.

Windows 10 install, one year anniversary now. And I sweated it out fearing a database crash, never happened.

* Made full .rar archive of existing install.
* unzip new version, new folder.
* copied over config.ini
* copied over keys folder files.

And voilá -- WF is up.

Mastodon and Fediverse Welcome to New Members

And some Guides, as there's much to learn, enjoy here. I love the LifeHacker guide mentioned below, it is wonderful - reread it not long ago, highly recommend it.

Mastodon is not all that this new space has to offer -- it's only one of the platforms here.

There are others, and it's quite an interesting place. Read the manuals, find your route, enjoy diff places - like when we travel, our instances here are like the local Cafés I so enjoy visiting abroad.

@SuperDicq Thank you, glad to be here. 🙂

The instance looks great from what I have seen, and I come via a recommendation from our friend @koyu, via her Recommended Instances page. Yours is one of the few selected, and deservedly so.

I looked at the front page, read the Terms of Service, saw the 5,000 char toot limit and smiled (been bugging Koyu to improve hers, she agreed).

Also checked my first little Hello world, copied the toot url and searched at some places I have accounts and are notorious for blocking others (kouyu's included). AND, the good news, I can see it.

So Tokyo,cdrom works for me as a general Publishing account possibility too - important, as I am a writer and fediverse amateur reporter, blog poster, opinionated and independant mind, etc. Some people will add less flattering opinions, possibly, lol... 😛

I am enjoying the instance already. Added it on my Pinafore control deck, and it's #19 in the list, but I foresee scrolling down to it often. Koyu's number 18, right next door, and most of the others I visit occasionally only.

Thanks Koyu for mentioning [this and other **good instances in your list!**](https://web.koyu.space/instance-recommendations/)

#FediReporter new instance landing... All good.

@nolan

Won't I get confused or lost, where am I?

No, no fret -- Pinafore allows a big range of Themes, pre configured Colour Schemes so you can keep track of where you are, even in multi tabbed, multi instance moments.

See this post with a full Gallery of #Pinafore Themes

Pinafore client – A sampler of all the Colour Themes available

@yann @koyu

It's a Pleroma instance -- and that is THE BEST platform for the 'micro-blogging' thing mastodon purports to serve.

5,000 characters toot size limit, expression without shackles. #MarkDown goodness, much beloved by style conscientious posters and Content Producers.

Seem nice - I had enjoyed conversations with @SuperDicq in threads in the past, at other places I have now debanded from. (the blocking damage to my published work being the main reason, as much as the local sysadmin there hates me saying so, and vehemently denies it.)

#FediReporter in the beat, finding a new instance to enjoy, many thanks to all the dedicated sys admins and mod staff who labour to make these available to us all.

@SlowRain @joaopinheiro

Hello SlowRain and sorry for taking so long to respond -- this account is not one that I use frequently, so I just found the notification now, and am promptly responding. :)

João had sent me a Direct Message to my main account -- which is now @rgx .

He told me about your request and I looked around a bit and could not find any instance with a theme close to Medieval History. I did locate a few users who are interested in History and passed the info on to João, who relayed it to you, with a cc here as well.

The German instance João mentioned is the one I have selected as my main home now, as it has some advantages compared to my previous one (which suffers from some fediverse blocking which is damaging for my blog publishing and announcements). I would recommend it, as João said it's open to us English speakers, and has a capable and understanding admin (plus it uses the Glitch-Social variant of Mastodon, allowing some nicer text formatting, etc).

João has mentioned Friendica and says he likes it -- but the address he's using ( @libranet.de ) seems to be open registrations only at certain times (it's open right now - at https://libranet.de/register )

https://friendi.ca has information on the Friendica project. If you want to see and give it a try, there's a Try out instance where accounts only last for a week, being auto-deleted after that.

https://tryfriendica.de/ is the place, and I would recommend it. There are other, more permanent instances in case you want a Friendica account for normal use.

Feel free to contact me for any more info, I will be glad to help -- use the @rgx address for best results. 😃

New Discuss Forum now open at Koyu.space !

Wonderful to see a new Forum up and available for people — Thank you Leonie and Zack.

I just saw your reply to a comment in mastodon/Pleroma messages, and was glad to see you got it installed and running.

And it’s even a new type of Forum, I have used Discourse quite a bit recently but not seen Discuss. Looks good and has the essentials for me, that are so sadly missing in Mastodon in most cases:

enhanced text formatting as desired (here with MarkDown and BBcode supported).
In-line image placement, we can place an image anywhere in a post; not only at the end of it, like in normal mastodon practice.
Longer posts are no problem.

My first impressions are good — as I write this, I find the interface light and responsive, easier to use than Discourse which uses the two pane, side by side mode by default.

A Forum with all these features you described is basically as good as a Blog page for rich content posting. And CAN be used as a Draft building area for posts, later easily copied and pasted into the blog host.

I do use the Discourse forum like that sometimes, and a well crafted post can be directly imported into my Write.Freely blogs.

Forums add the Commenting that WF doesn’t have at this time (intentional, as they prefer to keep all ‘social distractions’ out of it).

Will be telling friends and posting about this.

Thanks for adding it, Leonie and Zack. Feels good!

FAB now has 3 options of Front End look :

- Pleroma User Interface, slick and feature packed.
- MastodonFE, which is familiar to any masto user, and better since it's Glitch-Social web client (extra features compared to dumb vanilla instances)

And.. As I am writing this, Puniko has added a new one. SoapBox FE (front end), v.1.0 by Alex Gleason, now available here too.

Screenshot attached, showing it with the Dark Theme selected. A simpler and friendlier front end for new users -- I think it has great potential, is light on resources and fast.

(screenshot is 800 x 413 pixels, half size of my display, so file size is manageable)

* Mastodon - Options for Moving an Account ? *

*** "Take your information and do what you want with it." ***

That suggestive text sounds like Freedom of movement is granted and important, doesn't it? That is directly copied from Documents at JoinMastodon.org -docs.joinmastodon.org/user/mov.

The truth is less rosy though. There are easy and reliable ways to :

* Export the list of people you Follow.
* Export lists of people you Mute (hiding their posts from your view)
* Export lists of people and instances you Blocked (barring their content reaching you).

But, sadly -- your personal data, all the Toots you spent time in, the images and videos contained in them. Not easily accessible.

If an instance dies (and it does happen), it's all Lost. We need better. Facebook is now offering a wonderful User Data Export tool.

I love Writing, so this is Long Form prose. Lavishly illustrated, References and links included. A Web Magazine page I am proud of.

@maique @Mastodon @Gargron

I am very interested on this topic and writing a Blog page on the Moving Accounts in Mastodon for today.

I understand importing an older account data into a new instance has HUGE issues (it’s all over other instances in Fedi, sync issues, mind boggling). It’s likely impossible, yes.

But to have a GUI viewer for the user’s personal data would be a Big help. I posted a question to some friends this morning, and got a pointer to an Awk script as a solution.

But we need a GUI tool, so we can read and possible copy and reuse content from the archived data as desired.

My personal archive has 7,000 toots, about 400 MB of images.

Thank you for any suggestions and for considering this request!

I was pleasantly surprised by the interest generated by my Discover Pleroma. An alternative to Mastodon -- write.tedomum.net/rgx/discover page. Various people contacted me, interested in trying out Pleroma, and asking for some recommended instances.

So this page is intended to provide :

* Todon.nl - Admin Reacts to Polite Inquiries. *

***Surprises on Fediverse always.***

Like, this morning when I start visiting the various instances where I have accounts, friends, a presence.

And then I switch my *Pinafore client*, which is really useful for someone like me. *Easy to connect, one click instant switching*.

Except, it shows '*Internet Request Failed - Showing offline content*' when Todon.NL is the selected instance. A sign something is wrong, like the Net connection at our end being down, or even a remote server being offline for maintenance or other reason. That wasn't the case here though.

All the Details, plus *an official* ** Moving account announcement ** *for my current, main personal account*.

I was pleasantly surprised by the interest generated by my "Discover Pleroma. An alternative to Mastodon" -- write.tedomum.net/rgx/discover page. Various people contacted me, interested in trying out Pleroma, and asking for some recommended instances.

* Is it important, which instance you are in ? *

Yes, I believe so. And wrote a blog page about that *which is currently my most popular one* -- "Is it Important, which Instance you are in?" write.tedomum.net/rgx/is-it-im)

This will be Part 1, with detailed suggestions on finding and evaluating Instances, via Fediverse.network or Federation.info sites. I will walk thru the exact criteria I used on a personal search about 10 days ago, and the nice results found.

Part 2 will be separate to keep page size reasonable -- and will directly and clearly list Recommended Instances. Writing and posting it next!

@realcaseyrollins @igel @design_RG @alex Alex is going to win over many many new users -- I am impressed.

Honestly. For a new user coming from FB, I have not seen anything easier to adapt to. Kudos are in order!

Excellent design, simplicity while using the underlying much superior Pleroma back end.

I am giving up on Mastodon, tired of the project's tight control and lack of innovation. Still like GlitchSocial, but it's much slower than all the Pleroma instances I have tried.

Eugen could really look and consider ideas, but. You know. 😉

#FediReporter for #UI #UX improvements.
