Wouldn't it be great if we had a Framework Phone from @frameworkcomputer now that's a phone I would buy , especially if it supported Mobile Linux.

This is why I got a #FrameworkLaptop !
I spent maybe 10 minutes opening up and closing my #Framework16 to snap a picture of my mainboard for a potential warranty case.

It took me 10 minutes because I was hyper-paranoid about missing a step, but you can realistically do it in under 5 minutes.

I don't like tinkering with hardware, but I'm not tech-illiterate either, so this is a good middle ground of what is doable.

I've put in a deposit on a Framework Laptop 12 DIY Edition. Looks like ham radio was the thing that finally got me to commit to Linux!

Looking forward to using it for:
- Portable operation (POTA, public service, etc)
- Dire Wolf for APRS
- Reading and marking up ham .pdfs

h/t to @KR4BVU for turning me on to Framework.

🔧 Right to repair, but not to fix security?

Framework’s philosophy empowers users to open, upgrade, and repair their devices. But with great openness comes a security catch.

On the Framework 13, pressing the chassis intrusion switch 10 times resets the BIOS, removing passwords, Secure Boot, and more.

We flagged this to Framework. Their response?
"It's a feature..."

That’s risky. This reset might help with recovery, but it also hands an attacker physical access to critical settings.

Kieran explains the issue, what this means for security, and how to protect your device.

The Framework 16 laptop detects when it's booted partially assembled. It boots into a special mode to walk you through completing the assembly. The screen updates to reflect your progress and prompt the next step. This requires no tools to complete. Impressive! Watch:

Wearing out the F5 key on my keyboard waiting for my @frameworkcomputer to ship. 5 business days is killing me.

Finally pulled the trigger on a @frameworkcomputer Laptop 16 after thinking about it for far too long.

And now to start preparing my Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 for sale. Even though its specs are so much better than the Framework 16, it's so much more difficult to even just swap out the SSD that it's laughable. So instead of a paltry 16GB RAM on an amazing processor, it's time to grab 96GB RAM on the Framework (and probably watch them announce a refresh 3 days after I receive mine).

I don't want to ever need to go through the absolute hell trying to get this Galaxy Book open ever again after this.

And of course, it'll be running my current obsession, NixOS, let's gooooo.

Since it's been a little over a year since I got my Framework Laptop 16 and have been using Fedora Linux on there, I published a new blog post with my thoughts on the laptop and my experience has been daily driving Fedora for a year.

I'm spending so much of my time right now looking at Framework laptops when I already have a Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 that I'm quite happy with (though the speakers don't currently work under Linux). The big limitation for my on the Book 5 Pro 360 is that it has non-expandable 16GB of RAM and I find that a bit... restrictive though it has served me well for most of my time using it.

I can probably sell the Book 5 and get most of my money back for it and put that towards the Framework. I know it will be a step down in many areas, but... I just believe in Framework's mission and in full Linux compatibility that I can't get away from wanting it. Seems like NixOS runs well on them as well, which is my main interest and goal.

Someone local was selling their Framework but when I got in touch with them they told me they weren't going to be in the city until mid August. So why put your ad online right before you leave?

Anyways, I'm almost certain I will end up ordering a Framework at some point in the very near future.

While we're talking about Framework here... can we get a bezel in blue at some point? Feels so odd to have green, lavender and red but no blues.

Update: They've agreed to send me the parts "as an exception". Better than nothing, but I'd rather non-Australian companies would recognise their legal obligations with more grace.

Mmmm. Framework are giving me the run around with sending me a replacement keyboard for my laptop. My delete key stopped working properly a while back. Other early adopters have had similar problems: community.frame.work/t/broken-

They're saying I'm outside their 1-year warranty so I have to buy my own replacement keyboard. USD$80 delivered.

Australian consumer guarantees beg to differ. Hopefully they do the right thing.

@algebraicterror my #FrameworkLaptop AMD version makes me very happy. There are some minor glitches under #NixOS, but ingeberal it's a pretty good machine and it has big post sale value, because its modularity.

I never did a follow-up to my Framework 13 first look video back in 2023. But with the recent troubleshooting/RMA experience I had, maybe it's time to write a new video. Only slightly clickbaity.

TIL that the lid close sensor on the #FrameworkLaptop is on the audio / mic jack board. If you don't reconnect it properly when you swap the mainboard... your laptop doesn't know when the lid is closed, clamshell connections to hubs think the screen needs to stay on, and it doesn't go to sleep properly...

(separately to fixing that, I still need to get suspend/hibernate working again, something is wrong there as well)

Working on being fully on-brand - new transparent purple bezel for my #FrameworkLaptop (and some transparent purple expansions too, not visible from this angle).

Tonight I replaced #KDE Neon on my #FrameworkLaptop with #Aurora
but I remembered that I'd locked down ssh on all the machines in my homelab so that it wouldn't allow password logins - only ssh keys. So before I did the reinstall I ensured that I could use a specific ssh key to log in to all my homelab. Then I made double sure that keypair was backed up on my NAS. Then I wiped the disk on my laptop and put the fresh OS on.

Now I need to plug a monitor and keyboard into the NAS...
