There's a lot of debate in #auspol over the #welcometocountry and whether it should be said or not.

All I keep seeing is, "If you don't agree with me you're a nazi". People are pushing a false dichotomy and toxic politics again.
But they think it's ok because they are on the "right side".

It is #toxic politics.
It doesn't matter if you think you are right, stop playing their game, be better. Politicians want toxic #groupthink.

Everyone doesn't have to agree or they are [ad hominem here].

Opinion | Why Did Wall Street Get Trump So Wrong?

Wall Street mistook demagoguery for wisdom.

- I agree that:
- the fundamental question might be of almost existential importance to organised groups, and humans who wish to form and maintain them.
- finding common ground is essential, as is nurturing empathy in all parties.

- I sumbit that:
- enquiring minds might enjoy examining the findings (or what we might divine of them, for such firms, if they have any sense, have long since obfuscated their work) of Cambridge Analytica and their ilk: research.bangor.ac.uk/portal/f although please note that state-of-the-art circa 10 years ago may now be old hat.
- theologans are a fine source of information regarding tried-and-tested methods of creating inclusive "in-groups".
- lesser groups that depend upon cohesive thinking like cults, militaries, resistance or political groups, corporate entities, and so forth, are all worthy of consideration too. The real nuggets of gold are finding the "happy-clappy" groups that manage to absorb & bestow happiness upon their adversaries. Not sure where one finds such groups though (outside mathstodon.xyz obviously).

- I'd love to know if anyone has come across any "threads" that are interesting to pull at, or salient web-search terms that are a good start, in reading about such things.
- I'd be curious to know how folks (eg in NATO, CCP, etc) taking high-level geopolitical perspectives might view this problem.

Social media isn’t "democratized" just because people sit in Echo Chambers, surrounded by those who agree and cheer them on. True progress comes from challenging ideas, questioning assumptions, and pushing each other to think, learn, and grow—not from endless back-patting.

Saying #Bluesky is #decentralized is like saying electric vehicles are emission free #EV With it’s it’s investors and nagging need to provide moderation of some sort I don’t see Bsky turning around it’s latest centralized push. If it is truly decentralized then there’s no need for moderation. Let the community decide instead of investors, a corporation, or a team of #groupthink

I sometimes wonder if the #socialmedia experiment is doomed to degenerate into #echochambers and #groupthink. It inherently is a popularity contest which incentivizes appealing to the widest possible audience and pursuing #followers without regards to content. I have never used #facebook or #twitter but I thought the #fediverse might be different because it is not profit motivated, but #mastodon has similar problems. Communication methods like email or forums don't have this problem.

Wife and I have been watching home decorating shows. What's with all the obsession over mid-century modern?? It's like a cult. There are actually other styles and other periods in history.

i think i've engaged enough violence in me and around me for a spell. including that expressed by me.

time to move on to that liberating exhalation realized when all things we call 'legitimate' are in truth illusory, arbitrary, and potentially decompensating patterns.

Got Donald Shoup's "The High Cost of Free Parking" in Libby as an audiobook. A very depressing listen on the #UpperWestSide. We'd so benefit by smart meters but they will never happen because the money would go into a central fund and never benefit the local area. Must be happy with elimination of #ParkingMinimums. Do love the #groupthink analogies with doctors prescribing lead because that's what they all do.

May I add some hashtags in order to solicit views of psychologists and others who deal with human (or animal) cognitive modelling of reality? I would be fascinated to read about the degree to which we're all vulnerable to bias, the highest-yield methods of protecting oneself from bias (especially in social media), and of helping reflect back to others their own views in a way that lets them critique them. I think the last point is especially hard, especially if the other person has no desire for critical thinking (and as humans, we are terrible at critical thinking!).

If there are any textbooks on the subject, ideally written by scientists &/or aimed at scientists, I'd be keen as mustard to know about them!

If anyone has opinions on the work of Han, Lee, Wang, & Baldwin (librai fact checking automation - github.com/Libr-AI/OpenFactVer ) I'd be all ears too.

Please feel free to boost this if you think answers might interest you.
