From research prototype to production! This project began as a research idea during my internship with Ozette this time last year: what if we could create a chat interface for a single-cell phenotyping visual analytics dashboard, and actually have an agent *reconfigure the visualization for you*? One year later, after lots of testing, our system architecture is deployed in production Paper forthcoming!
#Eurovis 2025 is on in Luxembourg this year and is being hosted by my research group VISINT from LIST. Come and join us for the conference.
It vexes me that UI books written by current IT practitioners inevitably descend into API-call-fest—a code dump, as it were. This sort of presentation is ineffective. In fact, it is childish.
A typical #programmer in IT who designs and implements a non-trivial UI, webtop or desktop, is seasoned, experienced; he knows how to use an API. But he does not necessarily have a background in usability:
PSYCHOLOGY
• The #psychology of visual and tactile perceptions
• The psychology of human-computer interaction #HCI
• The design and administration of psychological experiments on interaction and usability
• The design of the interaction flow
LIBRARY SCIENCE
• The design of the underlying information architecture
• The design of information layout
VISUAL ARTS
• The effective use of colour
• The effective use of font
There are tonnes of other usability-related subjects that fall way outside of modern CS curricula. The #UI books should aspire to teach these cross-discipline subjects on #usability to #CS and #IT practitioners.
Sure, code samples and screenshots of some popular UI framework would be helpful. But the main thrust of these books must be usability, with the organisation aimed at tech-savvy engineers and programmers, not novices.

I have an odd little side project (one of many ) that can probably be best described as a new type of environmental sensor.
That sort of thing doesn't really fit my usual range of #HCI conferences, though, except maybe if you frame it in the context of "citizen science" or "urban sensing"? Would anyone have an idea where to publish something like this? (Open access venues strongly preferred.)
Unpopular opinion: #HCI as a field is doing way too much unpaid legwork for Big Tech. I feel like at least half of #CHI papers are some variation of "$BIG_TECH_FEATURE considered harmful", and the best-case outcome is that someone at the company in question reads it and says "Oh, interesting point, you're right, have a cookie."
I think we should actually build _new_ things instead that are a) not harmful and b) not built on sand. But of course, this is harder.
All web browsers should have a contextual menu item to "copy ALT text" when you secondary click an image.

www.youtube.comNew Study: A Lack of Intelligence, Not Training, May Be Why People Struggle With Computers
Training alone cannot bridge the digital divide. The findings suggest a fundamental rethink of interface design is needed, as complex systems inherently disadvantage those with different cognitive capabilities.
"... awkwardly designed interfaces have become a driver for the digital divide," says Oulasvirta.

Huzzaah \o/ a topic I care deeply about, designing for, with and by people in sensitive or vulnerable context. I have been allowed to co-organize this workshop at the decennial (thats once every 10 years) #Aarhus2025 conference. its not a big conference but I am probably as close to a son of the Aarhus approach to #design and #HCI as one can be.
