(rizadinha!)

Wars, death tolls, refugees 19th century

#TheHouseOfDoors novel has a main character, the narrator, Lesley.

She's in Penang in 1910 and speaks of some #ChineseHistory - the #TaipingRebellion. WP has 20-30 million deaths. But I've seen estimates x5 higher.
As well as the rebellion leader thinking he is the #BrotherOfJesus, the rebellion is lead by the #Hakka, who I've heard refered to as the #NomadClan, or "#GuestPeople who may have offended the Emperor". Whereas they had lead a rebellion!

Met a young Chinese-Indonesian yesterday in #Kyoto who was fluent in both #Hakka and #Hokkien. Was pleased to know that some of the younger generation in #Indonesia still speaks their heritage #Chinese languages.

Should be little surprise that he was from #Medan #Sumatra.

Taiwan Trails and Tales

One of the mechanisms that the organisation put in place to help facilitate dialogue among visitors and locals are these trail passports. Many of the trail sections have a corresponding stamp. Some are placed in businesses, some historic buildings, some community centres.

As you collect the stamps, you can talk to the locals, visit their businesses (although there is no obligation to spend), and learn about the region’s history and culture.

The first stamp is housed in a fish restaurant and corresponds to section 2 of the trail and depicts tung trees growing beside a river-a common sight in this part of Taiwan if you visit in May.

The 2nd stamp is kept in a temple and shows an ox-drawn cart being driven uphill by a farmer with a whip. This is in reference to section 6, “打牛崎古道,” a historic path which acquired the name “Ox Beating Trail” because reluctant cattle only went uphill with encouragement.

#hakka unicorn dance performance at #hkust, organized by our South China Research Center. The introduction on the event poster said there are 3 traditions of unicorn dance, one of them is “hoklo” (a region in eastern costal Guangdong), where my father came from. Im not aware of this tradition, but I can’t ask him anymore. There are times I miss him a great deal.

Besides being a #Cantonese speaking #IrishBornChinese, I also understand #Hakka. My mom is from #LamTsuen ( #TaiPo, #HongKong).
One thing Lam Tsuen is famous for is their Wishing Tree (they re-opened to public this year and was jammered during #LunarNewYear recently).
This video gives you a wee glimpse of a Lam Tsuen through Hakka (there's English subtitles). It's one of my fav cultural heritage YT channels to learn more about Hakka food, language & its culture). Enjoy! youtu.be/jy9J9gx4toE

Today I went to Miaoli to watch the flowers. I took some beautiful pictures. I ate #Hakka noodles, delicious. I visited the museum of Hakka culture.

Wow, #JohnMcWhorter’s recent piece in praise of #Glossika got me really excited—they have sentences for #Mandarin and #Cantonese, but also #Hokkien, #Hakka (two), #Wenzhounese!!?? 🤩

I am really not a fan of studying random sentences—Core2k Anki decks 😩—but I’m going to try it as a way to train my ear for these languages.

My personal #Japanese practice does involve close study and memorization of sentences with audio, but from a story/novel because I love real content.
