For my part, I believe our intelligence gives us a unique ability to appreciate and value everything around us. Think of Star Trek's concept of IDIC.

Intelligence is likely the only strategy that will see life leave the nest, but we'll only do it if we don't succumb to what has obviously arisen as our Great Filter - the polycrisis of fascism, greed, capitalism, and racism.

Plenty of lower empathy folk are kind, caring, moral, and conduct themselves as such.
Plenty of higher empathy folk use their ability to manipulate and even abuse others.
