We made it to the Ross Ice Shelf edge this afternoon. I gave a quick science talk on ice shelves on board when we were an hour away and at the end got to say - "ok go outside an look at a real one - in fact the biggest one". People were suitably blown away - a 40 m high wall of ice that disappeared into the horizon in both directions. #Oceanography #Antarctica #IceShelves #TAN2502

'Warm water' from #deepsea flowing towards one of #Antarctica's largest #iceshelves
Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne #IceShelf may be under threat due to relatively warm water from the deep sea flowing towards the shelf.
The melting of a massive ice shelf like FRIS would ultimately lead to huge #sealevelrise. However, researchers still have a lot to learn about this region, and it's unclear whether the increased flow of warm water is linked to #climatechange.

Staying in #Antarctica + #IceShelves Stina Wahlgren of Gothenburg University showed some cool results from the Huginn AUV, which mapped the underside of Dotson ice shelf, revealing interesting scoops and swirls in the structure, interesting for @OceanIceEU models to consider

“It’s one more thing that we need to monitor,” Gavin Schmidt said. “We need to get a better understanding of what’s happening under #IceShelves. Currently, there are no global #climate models that include these effects, or that can predict these effects. And that should be fixed.”

[1 reason this can’t be overlooked/discounted, is that right-wing #FossilFuel advocates #ClimateChange deniers keep pointing to “ice cubes in water” to reject #ClimateSolutions]

"Only 15% of [Antarctic ice shelf] pinning points [where floating ice shelves ground on topographic highs on the sea bed] reduced from 1973 to 1989, before increasing to 25% from 1989 to 2000 and 37% from 2000 to 2022. A continuation of this trend would further reduce the buttressing potential of ice shelves, enhancing ice discharge and accelerating the contribution of Antarctica to sea-level rise."

( Miles, B.W.J., Bingham, R.G. Progressive unanchoring of Antarctic ice shelves since 1973. Nature 626, 785–791 (2024). doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-070 )

This is clever stuff. There are visual telltales above pinning points, which show up in the satellite image record. If ice shelves are thinning, they will tend to lift off grounding points. This enables a time series of thinning since the early 1970s. Spoiler: it was rare, but is becoming increasingly common. That is Bad News.

An absolute MUST follow on here. @wavygk is currently posting fantastic images and lots of scientific insight from #Antarctica (lucky guy).

Really outstanding piece of work from Leeds Uni Remote sesning group, led by Ben Davison, on the observed changes to #Antarctic #IceShelves

This was a highlight presentation of our @OceanIceEU workshop bringing the #EarthObservation and #climateModelling communities together - which I am now coincidentally writing up for publication as I travel by train today...

Very cool that some of our #Ukraine partners in @PolarRES have made it to Utrecht in person to present some of their results on #Lagrangian #ParticleTracking under the Ross and Filchner-Ronne #IceShelves as part of the #PolarRES + #PolarCORDEX meeting

#SeaIce around the #polar regions plays a critical part in #protecting the adjacent #IceSheets. Less sea ice means less #sunlight will be reflected back to #space, causing #waters to #warm more & #destabilize surrounding #ice & #glaciers. #Coastlines are also much more exposed w/less sea ice, removing a buffer that could help protect #melting #IceShelves or ice sheets.

We finally have submitted our study about emulating #Antarctic sub-shelf #melt rates simulated by a cavity-opening ocean #model with a #NeuralNetwork

Main conclusion: a neural network is at least as good in parameterising basal melt rates as traditional physics-based parameterisations!

How much do #Antarctica #IceShelves melt? And what is driving those melt occurrences? That's the question our latest paper is trying to answer.
