And now for something completely different...

A quick Arnold Palmer. This is to make a tall 500ml/16 oz glass.

Brew up a mug of your favorite tea (actually coffee works really well here as well.) Make a bit stronger than usual.

While it is still hot, pour it over an equal amount of ice. I use about 150ml water and 150g ice. Stir in a tablespoon or two of frozen lemonade concentrate (I use about 30g.) Give it a good stir until the ice melts. I usually do this part in a Pyrex measuring cup, just in case. Pour that over some ice in a nice tall glass, balance for sweet/tart with a bit more lemonade or sugar.

Java updates for 2024Q2

Three weeks ago, the quarterly (security and stability) updates to various Java source code repositories were released. This means, new packages for OpenJDK versions 8, 11 and 17 are now in my Slackware repository. It took a while but hey, here they are.
For OpenJDK 8 I still use icedtea to compile the Java sources because it is convenient. The more modern

One of the things that always concerns me with #bootstrapped #compilers is that they very often lose any sensible #bootstrapping path at that point.

For example, it's impossible to build #Ada #GNAT from source without an existing Ada compiler for instance, but the source of the original one used for GNAT is proprietary and so entirely unavailable.

Is #adoptium , née #AdoptOpenJDK, officially the "new IcedTea" and IcedTea is deprecated?

Red Hat is (was?) supporting both, IcedTea-Web was donated to AdoptOpenJDK and #IcedTea hasn't released anything after JDK 8, but I can't find an official statement on the matter.

Or is it the case that OpenJDK upstream after 8 is officially buildable using only Free tools, so IcedTea no longer serves a purpose and Adoptium serves a different purpose (offical certification)?

@Cbfoley @GardenOfEden@mstdn.social Same here. Working as a chef, especially in the summer, I need to drink a lot of fluids. I don't drink soft drinks except once in a while so I drink iced tea. I make it by the gallon and keep 2 to 3 gallons always ready to go in the refrigerator. When I was a kid, if you ordered iced tea in a restaurant you got unsweetened tea and you put your own sugar in.

Nowadays, what people (in the US) expect and what we serve in the restaurant is "Southern sweet tea" which is heavily sugared. The tea I make for myself has one sixth the amount of sugar of the tea we serve to customers and it's plenty sweet, in my opinion. I also flavor my tea when I brew it so it vaguely resembles chai tea.
