@krafter

I'll stay with #SMS, using my #Jabber/#XMPP gateway, #sms4you 🙂

(I run my phone without #SIM and #Mobian does not support #RCS anyway, TTBOMK.)

"Der Knackpunkt: Wo stehen die Server – und wem gehören sie?"

Richtig. Solange ich mir nicht selbst aussuchen kann wem die Servers gehören, z.B. dem lokalen Internet-Verein, welchem ich als Mitglied vertraue, ist #digitaleSouveränität nicht gegeben.

Mein Internet-Verein mit Servers in #Berlin, DE, #EU bietet seit 2009 #Jabber/#XMPP an. Es gibt aber auch viele andere Providers. Siehe

Btw. a relatively new #Jabber client that tries to cover the Slack/Discord use case is #Prose by @prose. They just a made a release 0.8.2 yesterday (Congrats!), which I'm curious to try out. prose.org/

Seriously, IRC is not my cup of tea. I want to receive messages when offline, multiline messages, multi-device support, message correction, message reactions, message retraction, message replies… I'll stay with #Jabber, which is brandnew compared to Zephyr or IRC 🙂

No, we will stick to …

#Jabber

Which predates the other options by ≈ 13..16 years.

(At #Debian it's IRC4ever, though, but I use it through an #XMPP gateway. I also use Matrix with a bridge.)

@sbb @ulfi

I wish people had even higher expectations for #instantMessaging apps: #Privacy, #noAds, freedom from corporate interests, respect for #humanRights, low energy consumption, #digitalSovereignty. And not AI powered, flashy #stickers.

Free and federated applications and services, made and run by e.g. small cooperatives or volunteers, cannot compete with billion dollar companies on resources. We have other strengths, though!

(Btw. I love stickers!)

@dino Nice. Calls working for me again on #postmarketOS with #Librem5. Call icon no longer greyed out.

@Linux

Nice, that you have a federated messenger in the list!

Please add #Jabber a.k.a. #XMPP, too, which happens to be my preferred IM since ≈ 2014 (even it is much older, it exists since 1999!)

There is still no first class client for Linux, such as #Debian on desktop or #Mobian on mobile. Only for Google Android and Apple iOS which I do not fancy 🤷

As I already use #Jabber since ≈2014, before Signal has been released, there is no reason for me to change.

@gajim

#Gajim 2.1.0-1 will land in #Debian 13 #trixie within the next hours.
You can already install it from Debian unstable.

I agree, that there is no server-side meta data protection on #XMPP. But it compensates by

1. impede mass data surveillance, thanks to federation, and

2. making multiple accounts, incl. anonymous and burner accounts, very easy.

Note, that most #Jabber clients do default to #OMEMO E2EE "on" now. It took a long time, though.

@gino @nik @memo

(Thanks to @nicoco for both slidge and "XEP-0503: Server-side spaces"!)

A recent security audit of #Conversations_im¹ found that wildcard certificate handling didn’t fully comply with the spec.

Conversations was accepting *.a.example for c.b.a.example, even though wildcards are only meant to match a single label.

This issue has been fixed in version 2.18.0, now live on Google Play.

Sorry, if I misintpret your post, trying to understand Italian based on my mediocre Spanish 🙂

#XMPP itself does not define #e2ee, but almost all clients do support #OMEMO encryption, which is more or less copied from Signal.

In addition, you can choose a trustworthy provider, such a #cooperative or club.

Maybe for that reasons, German #police seems to believe (wrongly), that #Jabber (the traditional name of XMPP) were "the first pillar of #cybercrime"!

Yw!

Note, that when you have `apt-listchanges` on your #Debian (or derivative) machine, you get such information directly on uprade! 🙂

In 3 days, the jabber.fr wiki, a niche specialized wiki with a lot of outdated info and only one or two occasional contributors at the moment, has served more than 200 000 pages to shitty LLM bots.

Our PHP and mariadb processes are constantly hammered by them, most of which are masquerading as normal traffic with browser user agents.

Is there a better solution than blocking off entire countries and cloud provider subnets at the moment?
