@bplein Before generative AI, people had the same behavior with other sources of knowledge, like encyclopedias. I remember seeing kids just copy and paste the content of a Wikipedia article without checking their sources. But they were just kids, and it's fundamental to teach them how to use an encyclopedia, that it's just a starting point, and if you want to go deeper into a topic, you have to check reliable sources.
I think the situation today is similar to your description. We have text generators that give convincing answers to the unwary, and those who haven't learned to question the sources of knowledge will accept LLM answers without any critical thinking. The same is true of encyclopedias, books, magazines, and any other sources of knowledge.
The importance of critical thinking has never been as important as it is today, especially given how easy it is to create disinformation campaigns using generative AI.

My greatest aspiration is to one day become as intelligent as slime mold
Hmm, you ever think about how if we're not maintaining knowledge that we're losing it is another example of the 2nd law of thermodynamics. It's just "entropy" again... the default state it to not know shit / not be good at shit... there's more ways to do that than to know it / be good at it.

It’s important, when you’re making graphs, to think about the story you want to tell with the data, and what type of graph, and what features of the graph, will help you tell that story.
Likewise, when you’re looking at someone else’s graph, we all need to apply that critical data literacy and look at the scale on the y axis, as well as checking the labels, finding out the origin of the data, and considering whether the graph is accurate, a valid way to display that data, and what story it might be trying to tell you.
Call #Weird, call me SuperNerd, call me #nerd but I really enjoy doing this. Maybe it’s the #Learning, maybe it’s the #Fun, or maybe I’m a little more #Nerdy than I thought, but building out my #Homelab starting with #PiHole and working from there has been a wonderful experience. The documentation process has also been enjoyable; maybe it’s because it shows my work and what I’ve done as an #accomplishment

To increase #knowledge and #community exchange between underground labs, I am trying to make sure that folks at #SNOLAB can participate in seminars hosted at other labs. Not all labs stream them, but some do.
Tomorrow, the Sanford Underground Research Facility has its next "Deeper Talk" event. Folks at @snolabscience.bsky.social can gather in the auditorium at 11am ET on Wednesday to watch!
Giving yourself the freedom to make mistakes is a gift to yourself—the gift of freedom to explore new possibilities for your life and work.

This is not #climaterealism. It is #climatedelusion.
The new “ #centrist consensus” on #climate is emerging & its highly nationalistic, flirting with more #military involvement, & expecting at least 3°C of warming, thereby justifying #geoengineering.

CFR's Varun Sivaram has written a provocative new essay…
AxiosENG: I just handed in an assignment for my SPAN101 class.
ESP: Entregué mi tarea por la clase de SPAN101.
We had to make a one-page brochure about a Spanish speaking country plus a 2min video.
Nosotros debimos hacer una pagina en un folleto sobre un país de habla hispana.
I made a full, folding, brochure for Spain using mostly my own photos.
Hice un folleto completo para España haciendo principalmente mi propio fotos.
I ain't sharing the video.
No quiero la vergüenza de compartir mi video.
Pero! Aquí está mi folleto para visitar España.
I'm now getting to the point where I can write down most of what I want to say, using mostly present and past tenses, without help. And then I check my work on a translator. Getting about 80% of it right 90% of the time lol.
