You might know that #Fedilab runs its own translation server (using #LibreTranslate).
But did you know that the app also supports two other translators?
- #Lingva: you won't need extra steps though you can change the default instance.
- #DeepL: A more powerful translator. It's a paid service but you can get 500,000 characters per month for free.
Everything is configurable in settings Have a look to media descriptions).

#Lingva’s flagship site (lingva.ml) surreptitiously exposes everyone’s translations to #Cloudflare. Most consider the primary purpose of a #googleTranslate front-end to wrestle back some #privacy from oppressive tech giants.
So I’m calling it #hypocrisy.
In the very least, they should show users a warning banner so users don’t unwittingly give sensitive info to CF. And they should suggest that users choose another Lingva instance.
I've explained the #Fediverse #SearXNG #Invidious #newpipe #rss #Mastodon #peertube #lingva to a coworker, I can't hided my exited face and my enthusiasm hah

github.comFür Android und iOS gibt es anscheinend noch keine entsprechenden Apps. Das dürfte aber nicht all zu aufwändig sein. Solange kann man dort die Browser-basierte Version nutzen.
Alternativ gibt es für Android "TranslateYou" oder "LentilTranslate", mit denen man Privatsphäre-schonende Online-Übersetzungsdienste wie #LibreTranslate oder #Lingva (ein datenschonender Aufsatz auf Google Translate) nutzen kann.

Alternative front-end for Google Translate. Contribute…
github.com@davidoclubb @echanda I would not say #lingva.ml is a Google alternative since Google still sees all the queries. Google gets all the sensitive info so it can hardly be considered private. For privacy you need to run your own software, which I cover here: https://infosec.exchange/@bojkotiMalbona/108271072631878382

lingva.mlWe have been warned of #Lingva, an alternative front-end for Google Translate with over a hundred languages available.
https://github.com/thedaviddelta/lingva-translate
It will be available with the next #Fedilab release.
#TIL There are alternatives to Google Translate and DeepL that don't track you.
One option is Lingva, a proxy front-end to Google Translate. Another one is LibreTranslate. In contrast to Linva LibreTranslate doesn't rely on proprietary providers. Instead, its translation engine is powered by the open-source Argos Translate library.
You can self-host both, #Lingva and #LibraTranslate, or use one of the public instances.
Update: #GoogleTranslate (#PRISM)
#YandexTranslate [tax(profits) →Putin’s war]
#DeepL (shares sensitive txt w/tech giant; misleads ppl about it)
#LibreTranslate.com (shares sensitive txt w/tech giant; no privacy policy; solicits trust w/buzz phrases “libre”, “free & open”)
#lingva.ml (FOSS frontend; still Google)
translate.fedilab.app (no privacy policy but no evidence of mishandling data either)
Running locally: #ArgosTranslate
#Apertium.org
#translatelocally.com (EU funded)
@strawberryfieldsforever yes, indeed cuter. Thanks for recommending #Lingva, my friend!
@TheDavidDelta Can i teach lingva.ml things?
"ratrom talo" means "avoid nights" in Hindi, when you write it in Latin letters, according to Google Translate. Lingva doesn't seem to recognize that. It seems, that it doesn't recognize any other than latin letters, though not for a kind of sign language.
It does recognize रातों से बचें - but "latinized" speakers don't know how to write this.
Just noting :)
@humanetech please do not mention it without mentioning https://libretranslate.com/ too which is FLOSS. #lingva is still better than using Google but keep in mind that Google still has rights on the generated translation and lingva does not circumvent that issue.
