I feel that the news and social media is sort of like the seat that Morgoth makes Húrin sit on.

For those who haven't read it, Tolkien has a story from the First Age of Middle Earth. There's this guy, Húrin, who is a total badass. He's captured by Morgoth (Sauron's boss) and defies him, refusing to tell him the location of the hidden elf kingdom of Gondolin. As punishment, Morgoth curses his children and makes Húrin watch the slow tragedy that befalls them, transfixed on a seat. Importantly, Húrin only sees things that Morgoth gives him to see (similar to how Sauron permits Saruman and Denethor to see certain things through the palantiri) but the true story is bad enough.

What happens to Húrin's children is really tragic and plays out over years. By the end of the story, Húrin is released but is a broken man.

It's the saddest story I've ever read. But that's not the point of this post. The point is that knowing all that's going wrong in the world can add to the destruction that's taking place. It's important to give yourself permission to step away, and even more importantly to have a perspective that's not despairing. Don't see and hear everything through the wrong lens.
