one of my favourite things at the moment is reading dual language texts and checking the translation with the translator app (DeepL) on my phone... The variences between the #machinetranslation and the human #translation are something I need to think about.,
The Akihabara branch of the At Home maid cafe chain is piloting the use of Pixie Dust's Vuevo Display, which translates between about 100 languages in real time. The trial runs from 29 Jan until the end of March (just in time for the lunar new year and the expected increase in tourists, mostly Chinese, that are less likely to speak either Japanese or English).
I don't expect machine translation (MT) ever to be any good for the translation of literary material or of any other texts that go beyond the informational, but it is nevertheless handy to have here.
For example, I've recently been seeing a lot of posts in Swedish, so I am glad that MT here ( I think it's DeepL) has allowed me to make sense of short but interesting posts like this:

My grandfather wrote a novel in Ukrainian a long time ago (maybe1930s) and never published it. It was given to me decades ago. My Ukrainian is not so good that I could read it with any clarity. After many failed attempts to try to get it translated over the years, I finally am starting to get somewhere by feeding it into Chat GPT. Though an imperfect translation, I can't wait to be able to finally read it.

Analytics India MagazineJust came across this via a Japanese article where the author did a (extremely limited) test of it, and FWIW seemed to agree it was better than Google Translate and DeepL. No public API or anything yet but may be worth keeping an eye on.
I don't actually know anything about Kagi, but they do other stuff apart from machine translation too.
