Antoine Brias

🌊 As I wanted to explore how combining multiple data sources can improve marine detection, I built a simple toy model using hydrophone data and marked individual tracking methods to estimate cetacean densities. I simulate the movement of individuals with a simple Individual-Based Model (IBM), and for the density estimation, I’ve used Kernel Density Estimation (KDE), though other techniques like Kriging could also be applied.

You can explore the model through this Streamlit web app:

The CCGS Sir Wilfred Laurier was my workplace for two weeks out in the North Pacific. This is my third research vessel, and I've now been on American, British and Canadian vessels in my career. 12 hour work shifts every day are no joke, but it was a fun experience and I got all my samples collected successfully!

It may not look like much, but the light coloring on this little piece of filter paper is around 2 billion marine bacteria. While I've been out sailing along Line P, I'm trapping bacteria on these slips of paper by pumping water through the tiny little holes in the paper that are smaller than the bacteria but large enough for water to slip through. Once I get these to the lab, I can pop the bacteria open to collect their DNA and see who lives in the water and what they can do.
