There are an increasing number of scammers on Mastodon. A Mastodon admin or moderator will NEVER ask you to verify using a Direct Message or a toot. If there is something up with your account, you'll receive a notification from the Mastodon domain email address. This is the email address from which you have received your signup.

Fun times this morning after a recent upgrade to Mastodon 4.4 and Ruby 3.4. I use ruby-build to build Ruby from source, and install it into /opt/ruby-<version>. I don't add that to the PATH, because all the programs which need it can be told where it is.

I've got a systemd service + timer called 'mastodon-prune' which run various 'tootctl' commands to clean up Mastodon content, and this has been working well for a long time. After the upgrade it stopped.

The commands in the unit looked like '/opt/ruby-3.4.4/bin/ruby bin/tootctl accounts prune'. This stopped working after the Ruby upgrade, because *now* Ruby pays attention the shebang line in the 'tootctl' file which says '/usr/bin/env ruby' and tries to find Ruby on the path... in spite of the script being executed by an explicitly-invoked version of the Ruby interpreter. Since I could not find a way to convince Ruby to ignore the shebang line, I relented and added Ruby to the PATH so it could be found, and simplified the commands.

I do not understand why anyone would want this behavior, but it's what it is.

That profile has 1.7k followers, the most recent yesterday, apparently – I have the same issue trying to load the only other account on that server.

I can load the profile webpage at https://mastodon.devontechnologies.com/@devontechnologies but no matter what I try I cannot follow them.

I’ve tried with accounts from here, bitbang.social, theblower.au and autistics.life.

If I click Follow on the profile webpage then type in any of those server name and click “Take me home” (and log in as needed) I get a "The page you are looking for isn't here.” message

I can’t navigate to their profile within my logged in Masto sessions in Safari and Chrome on my Mac; via Ivory, Safari and Ice Cubes on my iPhone; or via Chrome on Ubuntu.

I’ve tried from two broadband networks and from my cellular network.

I’ve tried posting their username in a post to myself, but if I don’t accept the default replacement option from Mastodon (@mastodon.devontechnologies.com), the profile name is not a clickable link within my logged in sessions when viewing the post.

And if I do accept that substitution, the profile which *does* load has no posts, no followers, no info.

Current Masto versions on the various servers are:

mastodon.devontechnologies.com is on 4.3.7
social.europlus.zone is on 4.4.1 (was 4.3.4 when I started trying yesterday)
theblower.au is on 4.3.8
autistics.life is on 4.4.0
oldbytes.space is glitch-soc (no idea which equivalentt Masto version)
mastodon.decoding.io (server for most recent follow) is on 4.3.2

browser.pub seems happy to look at the profile, but I’m not an ActivityPub expert to figure what’s going on:

I'm considering setting up a personal mastodon instance at a subdomain of my website. If I decide to switchaway from mastodon to some other #ActivityPub software flavor in the future, can I still use that same subdomain, or will I have to change it to avoid AP weirdness? I'm hoping to create a sort of permanent address/identity.

Kommt das mit der Zeit, weil die Instanz so neu ist? Oder muss die neue Instanz "aktiv" föderiert werden?

One more bit of info - when I refresh the web UI, I can very briefly see it showing "5000" as the max character count in the compose window, before changing back to "500".

Anyone have any idea how I can make this change work in v4.3.0?

If any Mastodon admins are dealing with spam account sign-ups, it's worth noting that these accounts seem to universally use disposable email providers and burner email address. There's a GitHub repo that tracks these providers. All moderation inquiries are sent to a user's email on Mastodon, so there's no legitimate reason any Mastodon user should be using a disposable email address. As such, there's a git repository that tracks these disposable email providers. There are also bash scripts that will import the repository into tootctl for you.

Simply clone the repo and copy the bash script onto your server, then edit the script to point at your Mastodon installation and the directory you cloned the repository to, and it should handle the rest.

Side note: I checked our logs and we had a huge spike in attempted sign-ups from a bunch of different disposable email addresses this week, so I can confirm that blocking them definitely works. ​

#mastodonadmin / #mastodev question: I have some cached remote emoji on my server where the original versions are present, but the static derivative is missing. Is there a way I can recreate the static versions? I'm comfortable writing/running custom scripts.

I'd just delete them with --remote-only so they can get redownloaded, but I've read there's an issue where emoji in display names won't get refreshed when they're encountered.

For those that run a #Mastodon instance on #Ubuntu server, have you had any issues upgrading from 22.04.4 LTS to 24.04.1? Any tips appreciated.
